Looks like it is also missing the seatbelt hanging hooks in the rear that the military versions had. If I recall correctly they are identical to the front pair but the military versions also had 2 for the rear. I don't see the screw holes so maybe it was on later military versions, lol or I am just wrong all together. |

unless I am wrong and I have been before this is a replacement case that has a new number stamped in the case unless the military stamps new numbers in the case |

What I got from looking it up was October 1972. I sent info in on Birth Certificate to have it verified so will know for sure when it comes in. _________________ 72 181 Ambulance

I looked at mine again and it looks like the correct stamp I guess it is just a odd case without a place to mount the skid plate. You still have a great thing I think everyone is just trying to make sure you have everything correct because this is a very special thing that all of us crazy thing owners would like to have enjoy it we would. |

I'll echo what Citroen says above, you definitely have a 'one off' car !!
I took a look at the Thing Shop PDF catalog, https://www.thethingshop.com/images/thing_shop_catalog_2013_1.pdf, it appears they may a few of the military tops left in stock, check page 15 of the PDF catalog for details.
'Hugo Boss' made a good note in reference to the front turn directional assemblies. From what I'm been able to determine, from 1968 to 1972 the military 181's used the same front turn directional assemblies as the 1968 VW Bug. |

Thanks I do appreciate the critique, not taking anything personal, I want the info and appreciate everyone chipping in and letting me know what needs to be fixed. I want her to be as correct as I can get her. Going with mechanical first, make sure she is a sound driver, took her out today did real well, kids and I had a blast, Very nice running car, motor has no hick ups, runs a little rich, and she is a little dirty.

Small correction... All european models (even Made in Mexico), civilian and military, only have that kind of turn signals... Mine is from 1978... and have them... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538182 |

Looking at the ad, the turn signals look to me like 1966 style turn signals. 68 style look to have the sides reaching farther back than the one in the picture. _________________ 72 181 Ambulance

If you are using Beetle lights you need 67-69 to have a double filament. |

I used the early style single filament jobs on my conversion as I believe they look more authentic.
I run a resistor inline for the parking/running lights which limits the voltage to the bulb to around 8V. When you put on the turn signal, it gets the full 12V which causes it to blink brighter. 2 functions from a single filament bulb. Or you can modify the bulb holder for a dual filament bulb. |

I checked on the Military Tops The thing shop have, and they are orginal military tops on their Heavy duty Frames, My top, not original, is on an original frame, lol. So do I just keep what I have, or B. buy correct top on incorrect frame and sell what I have, or C. Buy correct top, take it off and put correct top on correct frame and sell other frame and top? Might go with getting fenders with correct tabs on them first or see how hard it would be to add tabs back to these fenders first.
Plus the turn signals. those are at least easy.lol _________________ 72 181 Ambulance

Have some updated pictures of my car, she has some new parts, and cleaned up, waiting on a pair of original Military Seats to complete her. So far all electrical is working now, blackout lights, beacon, spotlight. original headlight rings and turn signals found, engine cleaned tuned, and rewired. Beacon support fabricated and attached, beacon pole repaired. excess wiring removed from car and a ton of other things. Hoping my seats get shipped this week and get here in time for Bugorama.
