The "Black edging," that's just paint. Before I put the sound deadener down, I used my grinder with a wire brush to get all the old residue off. I painted for the areas that went to bare metal.
The batting I used is more like this...
http://www.joann.com/4oz-x-48in-x-45-yd-poly-by-the-yard/9442971.html
Here is a picture. It's about 1/2"(13mm for you foreign folk! haha) As you can see, why I like it, is because it compresses down to nothing.
Since we've moved to the "headliner" topic, here is a "copy and paste" of a post i made a while back...
First let me say, my opinions below are based on a Ragtop headliner installation. So...
1)Purchase the headliner installation DVD from Chris at ClassicVWBugs.com. He has a ragtop version, and I think he has a non rag version as well. I think they are both are available in DVD or streaming. Just email or call him. He's a great guy, I even called him few times during my process.
I did my ragtop headliner last month, and got his streaming video. My advice... DO NOT attempt this your first time without watching the video. It's VERY time consuming and lot's of tricks to it. HOWEVER... It's not hard, it's just time consuming.
2) You don't glue the headliner to the padding. The padding is just to "posh up" (as Chris says in the video) the headliner. You glue the headliner on the edges. You do glue the padding to the body. You can use...
- Weldwood Contact Cement (Red can version) but I personally didn't like it. Took too long to dry.
- Weldwood Landau Contact Cement (much Stronger)
- 3M Spray adhesive #90. DO NOT use anything besides the 90
3) Get a hairdryer/heat gun. The hotter the material the easier it is to stretch. The back window is the hardest if you don't get the "easy install" kit. ALSO... If you don't have a tool like the one in Chris' video, make something like the tool below. You can not do it without it. A putty knife some say will work I totally disagree, it needs a bend in it.

thanks very much! sounds good, ill check the dvd out and see how much he wants to send it for me to stream. whats the tool for?!
did you use fat mat extreme and how much in sq foot do you think is needed for the roof, inside the doors, rear wheel wells and firewall? like yours basically but with more metal to cover on the roof do you use the batting between the fat mat and the headlining on the roof? or just fat mat then headliner?
am trying to locate a 100% polyester batting around the same thickness, have made a few enquiries.
thanks again!

Looks good. Where did you get the multi-piece headliner? I got mine from WW but it was cut differently. Yours has better lines than theirs.
[edit to add a pic of the WW I just installed]

So above the sound proofing, carpet goes above it yea?
I have just installed some which was recommended by my upholster which is a sort of carpet and felt material-is the carpet glued down to this after the headlining is attached to the rear quarters?
Also should the sound proofing be attached to the baulkhead infront of the pedals? Is it really needed there?
Thanks |

Hi
Finally got this fitted at the weekend
My next questions are for the stuff under the carpet, have people used underfelt like this
http://www.newtoncomm.co.uk/products/2400-products-2400/
Or dynamat or similar ?
And how have both been?
the guy I emailed at the underfelt place suggested not covering the heater channels and front wheel wells with underfelt-im not sure if he meant the central baulkhead too - what have others done?
I have done the firewall so it's the rest I need to do now
Any help would be great
Thanks |
