I am new to vw, and have had my 68 bug with a 1600 for a little over a month now. It has ran flawlessly, besides having to re-tighten the coupler that came loose from my shifter. So I am at a stop sign, and shift into first gear and as I shift into second i hear a loud bang and I was no longer in gear. The engine was still running and idling, and would rev and sound just fine, but I wasnt able to get into gear. It shifts fine, and the coupler isnt loose. But it won't pop itself into gear. No idea where/what to do. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jake

Have you looked to see if the CV joints are still hooked up?

This thing has splined rear hubs...is the shaft just turning in the hub?

I would check the "coupler" that you re-tightened. Make sure you wire it up with the safety wire. Did you do that before?

I'll be checking both of those things once I am back home this evening and will keep an update. There is a soft clanking once it's shifted into first and I release the clutch as if I were going to start driving. Maybe that will help with some diagnosis

Betting its a rear drum...........pull hubcaps put in gear with brake on and let out the clutch...........go back and see nut spinning on 1 of the rear wheels.....lol.

Replace drum........tighten the crap out of it and drive on. If you have a bent axle it will continue to eat drums.

what did you end up doing? the same thing just happened to me. ive had the car for 2 weeks & im not familiar with vw at all. i am somewhat handy with automotive work, i have done quite a bit of standard replacement work on my 2002 silverado. i am eager to learn how to work on my vw.
