Well folks it looks like the Ghia is going to go up for sale. I just don't have the room for it at the new place or the time. The engine blew up and it will be a LOOONG time before I will have the cash to replace it.....another one bites the dust!

So with a blown motor the SB isn't a DD either. Bummer. Such a short lived adventure.

The SB's engine is still kickin, leaks oil a bit, but still running. I had put the SB engine in the Ghia for a bit, but the Ghia's engine is toast.

Small update......No I didn't sell it....didn't have the heart to. Its at my friends house in the desert

I found and engine at a garage sale for $100.00 It looked eerily like the blown one that was in the Ghia...same muffler and pulley. It has not been rebuilt as far as I can tell, there is no case savers in it, and is a 1600 DP from 71 to 73, it has an AE case. It leaks oil EVERYWHERE and needs to be resealed. It seems to have good compression and turns freely without any hesitation while spinning and has .007 for endplay. It came with all the tin, generator, muffler, and heater boxes, no intake manifold but there were rags in the ports. I plan to do a little resealing on it and install it in the SB to see how it runs.

The Ghia may ride again!

Started this week with some progress on the Ghia DD project. Burned up a dual purpose engine stand adaptor so that I can throw an ACVW engine on it and got the stalk mounted on the engine. Have to fab a winching point to attach to the roof joists so I can get the engine on the stand. There isn't anyone around here that can lift half an engine......lol.

I bought a bench model engine stand from CIP1, I could not get the yolk to fit tight to the engine so I didn't use it. It was as if as it wasn't manufactured with the correct angle. I was afraid to bend the engine stud.

Couple dollars in parts and a little creativity and the Ghia's engine is on the stand for the reseal and assessment.

Well the assessment of the engine is that it will most likely need a rebuild rather than a "freshening", but that will be decided after its taken down to a short block.

In keeping with my NY resolution.....I have been able to setup getting the Ghia to the shop for its resurrection on the 24th of this month....YEA!! I will finish the systems check and replace the brakes and shocks (known issues) and will check out EVERYTHING in the front end and replace whats needed.

I will put the verts engine back in the Ghia while its downed for repairs and the Ghia will be my DD while finishing the repairs on the vert. During that time I will get an engine ready for the Ghia also, so that it will be a quick swap when the vert is ready for its engine to go back in. Well at least that's the plan for now. Very Happy

The Ghia is at the shop now along with my cache of parts that I've been gathering. I'm still waiting for some more parts to come in, but I should get some decent work done on her on Thursday and Friday.......stay tuned.

Got alittle work done today on the Ghia. Got the rear tires on and changed out the front shocks. I also checked over the front suspension, the tie rod ends and ball joints are OK and just need new boots from sitting for now. I also pulled the calipers and took an abrasive disc to the rotors to clean up the rust from the years of sitting. The pads were new and the rotors measured to "as new" specs.

That's all I got for now.

Thanks Darrel!

So I had a little time today, so I changed the pass door for the one that I found last summer. It's funny how 2 doors that look exactly the same, don't fit the same on the car. My original door is in much better shape than the one I found, so I will run the other door while I fix my original door. I have to space the door back at the hinges. I think that I remember seeing another thread about that.

Got the spare passenger door finished today. The gaps are equal all around and it will work for now. The yellow is not the same exact color, but for now I don't care. It will be swapped after I fix the one that was one it. I also changed the engine seals today and readjusted the steering column. That's all I could get done before the rain started.

I have to find all my parts stashed for it.....a good weekend project! Smile

I have confirmed that it has had a front clip changed in its life, and the front clip was red (big surprise). It was grafted on in the middle of the "A" pillar and the center of the floor heater vents. It was done VERY well, and with the carpets removed (they covered the floor vents) you can see the welds on the inside of the heater channel. It also appears that the original color is Lemon Yellow, and I'm pretty sure that its going to stay that color. I REALLY wanted to paint it Porsche jelly bean blue, but don't want to go through the hassle of the interior color change since the paint on the interior is in pretty good shape.

I loaded up the vert with all the parts that I could find for the Ghia and will be taking them to the shop tomorrow...the sage continues.

Got a little more done this week. Got the front Formula Vee wheels on it this week and put the used interior panels on that I had, better than nothing for now. I also installed the new door check straps that I had...What a joy it is to not have the doors try to chop your legs off all the time..... Wink .

Pulled the engine out of the vert today and downed it for repairs. Pulled the fan housing and as I thought the oil cooler donuts had been leaking. Replaced them along with re-running the hard fuel line away from the manifold to keep the heat off it, and put it in the Ghia.

ITS OFFICIAL!!!! The Ghia is on the road again!!!

There are some small issues that I need to address, but all in all she runs a drives pretty good.

So I noticed on the way home Thursday a gas smell the changed in intensity while driving. I didn't have any time yesterday to play with it so today I cleaned her up a bit and emptied the garbage out of it. When I opened the trunk I found this...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

so I pulled the gauge sender out to find what was left of the original gasket. The only rubber in the fuel system that I didn't change.

I just happened to have a gasket in my stash, so I changed it out and WA-LA, no more gas smell. While the sender was out I took it apart and cleaned up the contacts on the rheostat and cleaned the whole unit up before putting it back in. Its still acting up a bit, but its WAY better and I think I can fix that too.

After that I went down to the car wash and cleaned the months of dirt from sitting off her. Then went for a blast down the highway to blow off most of the water, cleaned all the windows inside and out, and took 0000 steel wool and original Windex to the rear bumper...a few dents , but it cleaned up pretty good.

Parts came in yesterday from KGPR, what a great group, they go above and beyond with service.

So today I changed the rear window rubber, top to window rubbers, and I had a universal set of jamb rubbers. I know that there not the right one but will work for now to keep the wet and cold out, since its my DD now. All I can say is WOW!! what a difference in interior noise. I still need to change all the rubber on the pop-outs, I have it, but I need to quick fix the drivers "B" pillar that's broke at the base. I will just do a few spot welds for now, its not in very good shape and I don't think I could make it any worse.....lol. Ball joints will be changed this week. I'm having them done cause I don't really have the time or space right now to do it myself and there is a clunk in the right front.

It's driving better and better everyday....remember it was sleeping for almost 12 years. KG's are still as much of a blast to drive as I remember!! Now I just need more power, bigger tires, 4 wheel discs, and better seats! Cool
