Kourt,
Been thinking about your over-fueling problem. It sounds like the engine is staying in "cold start" mode. Maybe the O2 sensor is not signaling that it's warmed up? Maybe a pin on one of the connectors is pushed back into its' holder and not making contact?
Just my two cents, take it for what it's worth, but might help....
I doubt it's your custom air filtering system. _________________ ________________________________________

I got the engine cradle motor and mounts installed this evening. I also put the new clutch and throw-out bearing in and bolted the engine and tranny together. I put the engine and tranny on two separate movers dollys and used wood and card board shims to line them up. They went together easy as pie. The manual says to make sure the throw-out bearing is seated properly, which i think i did, but is there a way to make sure before installing the engine.
Thanks Brian |

Brian,
I just did the same things you did! The throw out bearing clicks into place on the little springs, just make sure they are seated into the grooves. It will self adjust if out of alignment. Hope this helps!

Is anyone here going to upgrade shocks, springs or rims and tires?
I have a 83 2wd with the HC oil pan but would like to move up to 15"GW rims and the 1.5" lift springs, but I want to be able to get her in the garage. _________________ 1983.5 Westfalia Bostig RG1 |

I moved to KONI shocks for front/back, new rubber all around, big-brakes in front, kept the stock height, but went with 16" CLK rims. I can't overstate how much stability is gained with the larger rims. It makes a big difference with side-winds and irregular road surfaces. _________________ == My Rides ==

Thanks boulderdrop,
How did it affect the power? Did you notice any power loss? _________________ 1983.5 Westfalia Bostig RG1 |

Nope, although I made sure that I kept the ratio the same; the tires are 205/65-16.
I also changed the gearing of 3rd, so that I can stay in it longer over the pass. However, I'm not sure I'd do that again, the "lug" from 2nd to 3rd is annoying. Stock would be better IMHO, the zetec can rev in the high-zone for a while without it being a problem... and the cooling-system is oversized. _________________ == My Rides ==

Nice! Yeah, I had mine rebuilt but I kept the same gearing. It sounds like the 16's are the way to go
Thanks!

|
Hey guys, I'm having some wiring issues today and am getting impatient waiting to hear back from Bostig. I am running an 84 so have the weird pigtail to wire in but the color of wires don't match and I can not find instructions for my van anywhere. I may have unplugged too many things.
Also I ran the wires for the oil light and MIL, but the instructions say to check the supplemental, there is no supplemental...
What should have taken me about an hour and a half has now taken most of the day. I can see why they are working on the instructions as this part of the manual has really fallen off vs the beginning.
I've included some pics for reference.

Kyle got back to me, I think i need to be more patient...those guys are great, no reason to stress, I should have emailed them, moved on to the next section and got back to it after i got some answers.
For anyone else that may get stumped, heres kyles reply:
Kyle, Apr 27 04:31 PM:
#1-Ignition wire from Bostig harness
#2-Black-Vanagon Ignition wire from front--Red/Black-not used with the conversion (starter trigger for Digi-Jet controller)
#3-Black/Blue-wire goes to reverse lights
#4-Old Fuel Pump wire-not used with the conversion
#5-Black/Blue-reverse lights-connects to wire in #3--Fuse is for reverse lights and the two pigtails go in-between ignition connection (black wire in #2 and Black/Yellow Bostig wire)
#6-materials for connection of MIL...you have older fuseblock and may not be able to use fusetap. Resistor in bag is for tachometer modification (only necessary with 86+ instrument cluster)
Picture number four is not posted here as when i got around to wiring the fuel pump I figured that spare wire out. _________________ 84 Westfalia, now with Bostig Zetec 2.0L, Manual Transmission

I posted this on the Bostig site:
How to connect tach converter plug:
Read through to the end:
Do NOT splice into the Bostig side of the wiring harness.
Recommended location for signal convertor: In the black connection box in the engine compartment (behind engine when looking at it; on driver's side). This is called the “distribution box”.
Wire connections can be made by splicing into "7 pin connector" [white round thing in a 1989], wires inside the black box. This is the one your Bostig wire harness connects to.
Black (from signal convertor) - "Ground "/ Connects to the Brown “ground jumper” ( on 7 pin connector) [Any ground will do, make it easy on yourself.]
Red (from signal convertor) - "Ignition 12v Switched power" connects to power post in upper right side.
For the Tach In/Out, cut the Green wire on the 7pin connector; When the Yellow and Green wires (signal convertor) are connected to each end of the cut wire, it will put the signal convertor "inline" between Tach & ECU. Use blade or banana plugs so you can switch it easily if you got it backwards.
Yellow (from signal convertor) "Tach in" - / Connects to the green wire ( 7 pin connector). Wire as it comes from the ECU.
Green (signal convertor) "Tach out" / Connects to other end of green wire ( 7 pin connector) wire.
If tach doesn’t work, you probably have the "Tach in / Tach out"connections reversed.

Got my cooling hoses in today, gear reduction starter hooked up properly, (thanks to Kyle), brake booster, (never saw a check valve!), Power steering almost, can't rotate the pump in port. Tomorrow the throttle cable, and shifting rods. Whew, it's a bitch to hammer in screws all day long...... _________________ ________________________________________

Tasks on the Bostig worksheet to do while the engine bay is empty....
1) Wire in the tach converter
2) Install the overflow bottle and bracket
3) Remove the old power steering reservoir bracket.
4) Move the brake vacuum booster line onto the other side of the firewall.
What else should be added to this list?
I wanted to install the some of the water hoses before installing the zetec, now I think it wasn't that bad of an idea. _________________ ________________________________________

- POR any bare sheet-metal
- Redo all the Grounds
- Play with the Airbox and what you want
- Make sure you don't have too long of PS lines (if you replaced them, they get too close to the exhaust) _________________ == My Rides ==

Other Bostig tasks to do while the engine is NOT installed:
1) Check the camshaft timing
2) Install the serpentine belt.
I hope everyone is also following this post here on Samba:

To add to your engine out list. I read about a lot of people having issues with the injectors being stuck. I checked my on the bench while the engine was out to avoid having the issues at the end of the job. _________________ 84 Westfalia, now with Bostig Zetec 2.0L, Manual Transmission

Also if you haven't read my thread cut the sub crank case before installing the oil pan. If you are using anything other then a hack saw it would be very easy to slip and do some damage. _________________ 84 Westfalia, now with Bostig Zetec 2.0L, Manual Transmission

For cutting the sub-crank case, I used a circular saw with a reinforced cutoff wheel installed. You can set the depth of that cutoff wheel so that it avoids the oil pan. I cut off that chunk of aluminum in about 30 seconds (wear ear and eye protection).

Anyone else's oil level light come on and off on every corner? (HC oil pan) it's starting to annoy me and I may disconnect it.
