Check these things in this order. Stop when you find something broke; Check the tightness/security of the axle nut. Remove the nut, pull the drum and check brakes. Check the splines in the drum and on the axle. Check the spacer and the outer bearing. Pull the axle tube and axle shaft. Check the axle spade ends. Check the fulcrum plates. Check the axle side gears.
If the grinding/shaking isn't caused by one of these components, then its inside the trans. If you find the problem fix it and reassemble everything following the manual, installing all required seals, gaskets and O-rings and torquing as per the manual. |

Yes absolutely, I've done it in junkyards when I just want a pair of 67-68 long axles and tubes. The drum and backing plate have to come off and the bearing needs to be pulled off the axle. The axle tube end casting needs to be unbolted from the spring plate and shock and then pulled back free of the springplate. Take the nuts off holding the side cover to the trans and slide the tube off the axle. To get the axle out of the side gears/fulcrum plates you need a quality pair of larger snap ring pliers. When the snap ring is removed, the axle, fulcrum plates and side gear can be removed. |

Turns out it was the snapring that kind of holds the axle in place in the trans,it was just free spinning, mechanic said it was his mistake but also said it could happen again because the groove looked a little worn. Thanks for all the help and info,Who would have thunk it? |
