I just picked this car up a couple weeks ago. It needs a lot of work, but it's very original and I can't wait to get it back on the road.

Looks like a decent start.
Are you going to keep it stock? |

Nice. Looks to be pretty complete. Any interior shots? What are your plans? IMHO you're always better off with stock, particularly with the early T-3s, and if, as you say, its pretty original, then you are already ahead of the game. But as they say...it's your car. |

Interior is complete but in need of replacing. My plan is to go back stock. Essentially leave the outside as is, get it restored mechanically first. It needs pans, that's my first order of business. It also has a gas heater.

Looks like a great project. Velvet green is a great color. Is that the car that was for sale by weatherly (not positive on sellers id) several years ago? It definately looks like the same car. |

Nice square and it's still hanging in there. I'd consider starting at the bottom and working my way to mechanical. pedals, brake line, and the tunnel will need some work. If you can get that pan corrected and have a good base then everything else may fall into place fairly well barring any unexpected issues. I like the outside of it as well. Weathered and holding his/her own (not sure if you have a name for it ). Look forward to seeing this build come along and welcome to the community. _________________ MonT3

Yeah, I believe it was an older gentleman that originally had it on craigslist as a 67 or 68. I had emailed him to tell him that it was earlier and that someone would want it for a restoration. He seemed very very nice _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

I always wonder, why.... why use a forklift to pull out a car. that's why I never ask for help when pushing a car. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

So, this car did not come with keys. I assume i just need to replace the ignition switch? If so, how hard is that to do? |

It's not hard but it is tedious.
If you're replacing it: Trace the wires from the back of the ignition switch to the bottom of the column head. Heat and release the wires on the connection plate and cut the very end of the wire next to the spade connector.
If you want to keep the ignition switch: Remove the wires at the switch by carefully heating the solder and pulling the wire-don't leave the heat there for long. You'll be pushing the switch out from left (bakelite/wire end) to right (keyed side). Don't try that yet...there's a little more to do.
Next, remove the steering wheel, the turn signal arm and the contact plate underneath. Then remove the single slotted screw and pull out the lock block (aluminum piece). You should be able to see the lock button sticking out-push that in with a thin file/screwdriver and with your thumb or other finger-push the back of the ignition switch into the column (the keyed end should be sticking out) until it comes out-make sure you support the bakelite piece on the back-the bakelite is as strong as a dollar store trash bag.

thanks for the info. So, its only the later cars that have the 1 key for doors and ignition? 65 had a separate ignition key? Does the switch have the code on it where i can have a key made? |

I've taken a few early ignitions apart and not found a key code (pre 66). The later style (66/67) is a little different and they have key codes. |
