First off, please note that the internet is not really fast in the condo so we might send the recap only in the morning (like the one for yesterday). Oh boy, where to start for yesterday? So we could start with the rain, follow by the rain and finish with the rain. I explain. We left New Jersey yesterday morning around 7:10am and it was 53F (11c) outside and it was raining, and I should say, dam pooring rain. The rain stopped around 11:15am. Impossible to take a picture of the sign when we crossed into Delaware….sign was far right (we were far left to use the EzPass lane) and it was raining too much.

We stopped for lunch but the sky was still scary so we kept the top. To cross the wonderful Lucius J. Kellam Jr Bridge-Tunnel (or if you prefer the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel), the sky was nicer but still few scary clouds. The crossing is a distance of 17.6 miles (28.3km) and the oldest part of the bridge-tunnel celebrated 50 years last April.

When we arrived in North Carolina, the sun had been with us for a while so we decided to stop to remove the top. It will cool to drive the dune buggy was starting to dry by the sun. We thought that it will dry the dune that was pretty wet (especially the carpet). When we arrived in Nags Head, I told Vincent: “It seems that it rained here”. Looking ahead of us, the sky looked threatening. In less than two, the rain came down on us…really strong. We tried to find a place to hide out of the rain to be able to put the top. I suggested to Vincent to go under a carport but he seems not really comfortable. The rain was not as strong so we decided to drive on without the top. Less than one mile further, bang another cloud with heavy rain. No time to hesitate, so we stopped in a closed business place to put the top. The damage was done, the dune was wetter than before we decided to remove the top, snif snif. Oh yes, I forgot to tell you that all this happened within 4 miles (6.5km).

We arrived at the condo around 3:45pm. From the outside, this does not really inspire but from the inside it was very pretty. We got two rooms (one is occupied by our good friends Jayne and Joe Spittler), two bathrooms, one kitchen and one living room. A big balcony where we can enjoy the ocean view and listening the waves….life if though.

We sent to the MOTB Headquarter to see, Sue, Bud, Jon, Paul and Vince…we were really happy to see them again.

For dinner, Vincent and I went to Captain George’s and I feasted on crab legs.

Returned to the condo (after a stop at Harris Teeter to do a little grocery) around 9:00pm and we talked with Jayne and Joe…really cool to see them as well.

Distance: 375 miles (604km)
Min Temp: 53F (11C)
Max Temp: 85F (29C)
States: New Jersey / Delaware / Maryland / Virginia / North Carolina
Beers: Day 1: Blue Moon
Day 2: Heineken, Red Hook IPA

We wish you a nice day and talk to you soon.

Today was a relax one. This morning, while Vincent was cleaning the dune, I took that time to do yesterday’s recap, select the pictures and talk with our friends (Jayne and Joe). It was mostly cloudy outside and the ocean was pretty rough. Not a drop of rain today and the temperature was about 72F (22C)…really comfortable. We left the condo around 12:20pm for me, shopping at the Outlets and Vincent at Staples to print few documents for week. Oh yes, I bought a few things for Mr and Mrs at the Outlets…really reasonable because space wise with the dune buggy. After that, a little drive to the Brew Thru (a must here) where we bought beers. On our way to the MOTB headquarter, we stopped at Burger King at the drive thru to get our lunch. The service was not fast at all.

At the MOTB headquarter, the Boston-Mabin family was there and we were extremely happy to see them again. Tom (Kathleen and Tom’s friend) and as well Kathleen and Tom that we hadn’t seen since ECVW. All these people (with Sue, Jayne, Bud, Joe, Jon and Vince), were preparing the kit for this week…real little bees.

At the end of the afternoon, Vincent and I prepared and distributed “spike-in” to people. A few of them didn’t know what it was and I think they appreciated it.

For dinner we were Sue, Jayne, Bud, Joe, Jon, Vincent and I and we went to the Tortuga’s Lie restaurant. I had crab legs again because in Quebec I don’t eat them a lot.

Went back to the condo around 8:00pm to select the pictures and do the recap and finish the night in relaxing.

Tomorrow start really the MOTB event and we can’t wait to see everybody.
I hope that my brother (Guy) and my niece (Elizabeth) will enjoy the football game tomorrow and hope they will get a nice show…Go Als Go! And thanks Anthony for all the wonderful years.

Good night
Vincent et/and France

Today was the first official day of MOTB 2014. We started our day by having our breakfast on the balcony, viewing the waves and the gorgeous sun. What a nice music to our ears the sound of the waves. At 8:30am we were at the rally point. We were 27 buggies. Really too cool again to see all the people…one year is really too long. Today the destination was the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. On our way down, two other dune buggies joined us. We could not ask for a better weather. During our ride, we lost contact with Paul Mabin, our sweep car. When we arrived at the parking lot of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, we finally got news, Paul had two flat tires. A few dune buggies went to see him to bring help (physically and morally). We went with Sue and Bud for lunch. After that, we spent time to do the Poker Run, kind of car rally. Vincent and I really enjoy that kind of activity. For dinner, we went with Jayne and Joe to the Black Pelican restaurant…a tradition since 3 years. Went back to the condo around 9:45pm, just in time to do the blog on the official MOTB website: http://manxonthebanx.com/ and our own recap. We hope that tomorrow will be as nice as today. Vincent and I will give a seminar on the afternoon on the Long Distant Travel Preparation/Planning.

Today’s temp: 85F (30C)
Yesterday’s beers: Sisters of the moon / Southern Pale Ale
Today’s beers: Dark Cloud / Pelican Nut Brown Ale

The seminar’s you are doing are a great idea! Our local VW club has hands on demonstrations on making repairs to engines, or doing electrical and they are a great help. We have only had a buggy for the past few years and had to learn a lot in a short time and have a long way to go. So wish we could have made the trip back there.

You do such a great job with the updates, they are so fun to read and your photos are beautiful! My wife and I will be coming to a MOTB hopefully in the next few years. Have a great time!

At the risk of repeating myself, the breakfast was taken on the balcony...oh yes while watching the ocean and listening to the waves....26 buggies showed up this morning. The Landon arrived yesterday (they are on a 2 months trip from Arizona) and Mark was with us this morning. A few people decided to start or continue the Poker run. For the rest, we went to Manteo for the Fiberglass seminar by the Master Vince. Wow, that man is a real magician when we talked fiberglass...everything seems so easy. VIncent and I would like to be half as good as him. For lunch, we went to the Full Moon restaurant. Having lunch on a "terrasse" with our friends by a sunny day, this is the definition of nice vacation.

In the afternoon, Vincent and I were giving a seminar on how to prepar and plan for a long distance trip. Which software we are using, how are we packing in a limited space, how many times we put to do the preparation, so lot of hints that we hope will help our friends.

For dinner we went to the Fish Heads Bar and Grill restaurant where we ate outside. We were a little bit more than 40 people talking of everything. Joe Wheeler also arrived tonight and joined us for dinner. Another nice day and evening.

Tomorrow, Mother Nature seems to do not want to cooperate but one sure thing, Vincent and I will be part of the group who will go to Salvo to hear the seminar on the VW preparation and maintenance that Eric will provide.

Temperature: 88F (31C)
Beers: Lost Colony Ale, Black Radish, Sweet Josie and Oatmeal Porter.

Have a nice evening and talk to you tomorrow,

Vincent et and France.

Today the weather was more than unsure. Big scary clouds this morning, but this is not stopped me to take my breakfast on the balcony…I know I am repeating myself but I love so much the sound of the waves that I take as much as I can before going back to Montreal.

We were about 20 buggies and our good friend Adam Hostetler and his father are now with us with the wonderful orange Manxter. Only few drops during the meeting, nothing to disturb us. We were about 13 buggies and few cars to go to Salvo for the VW repair and maintenance seminar. The seminar was held at Val and Eric Stump business place. Again, we were able to appreciate the hospitality of that wonderful family. What Eric explained was really good. If you are coming to the Outer Banks and want a difference amazing experience (Jeep, Dune Buggy), do not hesitate to contact Val or Eric and they will rent you a car. Oh yes I forgot…there is a bit of me at Val and Eric’s place because the licence plate of my first car is hooked on their wall…this is pretty cool.

Flat Buggy went on the beach today and really enjoyed it…he should be out again within the next couple of days.

For the remaining of the day we were free. Vincent and I went have lunch on the “terrasse” of Mulligan’s restaurant. After, shopping a little bit and return to the condo for a relax afternoon. Vincent took a nap during the time I was selecting the pictures.

For dinner, we went to the Blue Moon restaurant with Sue and Bud. Again the evening passed so quickly because they are such great people. It is now a kind of a tradition and we hope it will continue for many years.
Beers: Oktoberfest Carolina Seasonal, Unknown Over the Edge IPA and one more that we don’t know the name.
Temp: 86F (30C)

Oh my god…we are probably good people and/or had a good life because we could not have asked for a better day. 49 Dune Buggies showed up this morning at the Rally Point. Our destination was the Corolla’s beach. Vincent and I arrived before people on the beach to setup the cameras. A short time after we arrived on the beach, we saw a Wild Horse…it was magic. We had Flat Buggy with us and wanted to take few pictures in front of the ocean. He had a friend with him; a pumpkin already decorated. When I was taking pictures, guess who arrived? Oh yes, the wild horse. I stepped back to give him room. Vincent told me: Oh boy your pumpkin will not survive. The horse came to snif the pumpkin and I think his nose hit Flat Buggy who took that opportunity to pretend that he was sick and fell. This scared the horse and he went somewhere else. That means that Flat Buggy saved the life of his pumpkin friend. The beach was less flat than the previous years and a few buggies got stuck in the sand. Thanks to everybody who helped to get them back on the road. The lunch was on the beach and Vincent and I really enjoyed it. We hope this will become a tradition.

Around 2:30pm people were invited to a Swap Meet to buy parts. I took that time to relax at the beach for one hour. After I went back to the hotel to select the pictures for the recap (I took 1596 pictures today). Vincent and I went to The Dune restaurant and I ate crab legs again. After, we went on the beach beside Jennette’s pier for a bone fire and to talk to everybody. Tomorrow is another busy day and we can’t wait. Winnie and Bruce should be with us (few delays with their flight today for them), and we hope they will have a good night.

Temp today: 86F (30C)
Beers: Miller Light, Hoppyum IPA, Aviator Hogwild

Congratulations to our niece Elizabeth who passed her practical exam today and now have her driver license.

Have a nice evening.

Vincent et/and France.

Wow, another really nice day. The sun was there again. We started the day by a group picture. Winnie and Bruce were with us even if they arrived really late yesterday night. Always pleasant to see and talk to them. After the group picture, it was the Show ‘n Shine. We will know tomorrow the names of the winners. Donna Landon made really good cookies for all of us…thanks Donna.
For lunch, we went to Sooey’s with Lori-Ann and Mike Dario. Really cool to have them with us and to be able to spent good time with them. They are really good people who are really generous of their time.
In the afternoon, I took the free time to spent time on the beach while Vincent was cleaning the dune. Around 3pm, we were invited to the backyard of the Outer Banks Brewing Station. Around 4:30pm it was the Board of Direction meeting. At 6:00pm, the Kill Devil Hills police arrived to block streets for us (we were between 40 and 50 dune buggies) so we could go to the Hilton Garden Inn…really cool to have the streets blocked for us and seeing all the people on the side of the road or on their balcony waving their hands.
At the Hilton we wathced a video that Bud Zeller made. Everybody enjoyed it. After, Bruce did us the honor to tell us few stories…we could spend hours listening to him.
After, three cakes were made to celebrate the fourth edition of MOTB, the 20th anniversary of the Manx Club and the 50th anniversary of the Meyers Manx. Thanks to all the sponsors for the really nice prizes, we will never say enough THANK YOU. Finally, the evening finished by the results of the silent auction, many people left with smile in their face.
Tomorrow we will spend the day at Grave Digger for another wonderful day I am sure.
Temp: 81F (27C)
Beers: OBX, Oktoberfast Sam Adams and Bitter Bart`s Ale

Have a good night.

Vincent et/and France

Unfortunately, today was the last event day for MOTB. Before going to the Rally Point, Vincent and I went to the restaurant The Dunes for the breakfast. Around 9:00am, 47 dune buggies went to the direction of Grave Digger. Really impressive to see all these buggies in line with all different colors. People might like the show because once again, many of them were waving their hands from their balcony…even few wearing their dressing gown.

At Grave Digger, we had two challenges; the blindfold derby who consist to put a paper back on the head of the pilot and the co-pilot guide him/her between the obstacles. Vincent and I missed the last door…but man we had fun. Thanks to the Boston-Mabin girls for the wonderful bag that they decorated for us…really cool girls.

The second challenge was the slow drag race. We didn’t finish first but we had lot of fun. We were having lunch there so we enjoyed the time talking with our friends.

After it was the awards presentation. Vincent and I got the long distance award. We finished 3rd at the Poker Run, not so bad for the French Canadian who were doing this in their second language. A total of 18 to 20 teams participated to the Poker Run.

We came back to the condo to selected pictures. For dinner, we went to the Bad Bean baja Grill Restaurant with Winnie, Bruce, Sue, Bud, Jayne, Joe, Soctt, Paul, Evan, Tom, Lori-Ann, Mike, Kathleen, Tom, Adam and his father. We will be really sad tomorrow to leave our friends…we would have taken another week of vacation here with the nice weather.

Tomorrow morning will be our last get together at the Mulligan’s restaurant and after, everybody will go home. Few people already left today.

Temp: 86F (30C)
Beers: Aviator Hogwil, Natty Green’s Wildflower Wit – NC and Aviator full Throttle red ale.

Good evening and talk to you tomorrow.

Vincent et/and France

Yes, this is our last day at MOTB (we will be on the road tomorrow but driving in cooler states / provinces). This morning we were about 35 people for the breakfast at Mulligan’s. Most of us arrived early because we were all going back home (some by car, some by plane). We already can’t wait to meet everyone again…it will be a long winter.

When we left around 9:30am this morning, the sun was out so we decided to drive without the top. It was really nice but not really hot and mostly windy. The more we were driving north, the cloudier it got. On the Cheasapeake Bridge/Tunnel it was cloudy and really windy (from Vincent’s side). Jayne and Joe Spittler followed us (they were staying at the same hotel as us in Plymouth PA). We stopped for lunch and decided to put the top for the remaining of the day. The clouds cleared, but the wind remained.

When we arrived at the hotel, I was selected the customer of the day. This give us an upgrade of the room, a dedicated place in the parking lot and a sign at the entrance with my name on it….really cool. I am now eligible for the client of the month.

Just beside the hotel we had a Ruby Tuesday restaurant, so this is where we went with Jayne and Joe. Another great dinner with the Spittler. We learned that in Pennsylvania, the Fat Tire beer is not sold. Tomorrow we will leave early because we need to bring back the dune buggy in my in-laws place. We should be back to our apartment around 6:30pm….another long day before going back at work on Tuesday.

Temp: 57F-64F / 14C-18C
Beer: Yuengling.

Have a nice evening and talk to you tomorrow for the last recap.

Oh yes, here’s our last recap of the year. We could not have asked for a better trip for this last one. We left the hotel around 6:10 (Jayne and Joe were probably still asleep). It was very cold this morning 1°C (34°F). We kept the top on, turned on the heater seats, wore gloves and I had a blanket. The warmest temperature for a short time was 12°C (54°F). Nothing special to report, no wait at the border, a little rain for an hour or so. We arrived at my in-laws around 2:40pm. After a short chat with my in-laws, we left to our apartment and we arrived around 4:45pm. Home sweet home. We thank you for having followed us during our adventures and travels. We hope you liked our recaps. We’ll make sure the buggy is all ready for next year’s adventure at Nigara Falls in June.

Distance today: 761KM (473 miles)
Total distance for the season: From April 12th to October 20th: 24,568KM (15,266 miles)

Good evening and back to work tomorrow.

Gary,

Thanks for posting this info on the poster.

Since I've been asked a few times I thought I'd let everyone know that the poster is 18x24 inches.

Thanks.
