I was browsing Hot VW magazine at work yesterday and found your ride dead center on the write up about one of the big car shows. Not sure if you saw it yet, but it was the March 2014 issues of Hot VW

If someone else has the magazine handy, would be awesome to add a scan of the page to this thread.

Love what you did, 100% original and different more people should be willing to think outside the "bug"

Thank you Brad. Yeah I knew about it. I just didn't want to brag. I won second place on that show in the Rat Rod category. And first place in the radical category at Volksblast here in Miami.

I agree, this is a really unique piece. I love the whole military look, I think its something I might use while making a baja.

Also I believe I found those tail lights: http://www.eriksmilitarysurplus.com/rear-composite-lights-qty-2211614157.html

Not a fan of the whole rat rod thing but this thing is very cool. Nice original build, but that frame is def not safe, a collision in that would be bad...

Laughing will do

Bakerby: I agree with you. A collision would be very bad. I'm thinking about replacing the "headrest" for something taller that could serve as a roll-cage. As it is right now it is so low that if I was to get rear ended it would split my coconut in two. I'd also like to add seat belts.

15" centerline wheels painted and Firestone STS military tires

now here are some pictures of the floor and frame. Today while I was taking the pictures I noticed that after all the abuse I've put the MSS through, all the steel angles are still straight, all the welds are still there with no visible cracks, and it is as strong as I designed it and wanted it to be.

Hahaha
Fine it's not safe... I have been driving it once or twice weekly for the past 6 month, I drove it half way to Tampa from Miami and trailered it the rest, there I drove 3 times in a dirt bike track, then drove it back to Miami, and it still drives just well as it ever did.
So screw it... You say it's not safe, without ever seeing it in person or driving it... I believe you...
I say it is as safe as a fenderless, seatbeltless, convertible Ghia or Beetle with unstable tires.

yeah, but in any type pf collision, they dont have to worry about breaking all those welds and sending a piece of angle iron up their butts.

With all of that "structure" hanging under the car it seems like just bottoming out will cause that weak stuff to hang up and break off.

I agree with the first part. In a collision I would be screwed.
And I disagree with the second. Just watch the video from the first page and you'll see that I bottomed out many times during that ride in the dirt track. If you look at the undercarriage pictures you can still see some sand stuck between a beam and the frame tunnel. It didn't budge. So on the asphalt I think I'll be fine. Maybe not in rock crawling trail but neither is my Nissan.

Really like the car. Love the use of "surplus" items I would buy it just for the seats. If you know where guy could find some more "surplus seats PM me Wink

I think we can all agree that people have different ideas what a "safe car" is. Guys drive buggies with nothing more than a fiberglass body holding the floors from flopping around, not real strong there either.

Can we drop the bickering and just enjoy what the OP has shared, something different and really cool. Yes, there are things that other people and I would do differently but you followed your vision and built the car YOU want. Congrats.

Thank you brad. that's exactly how I feel now as for the seats, just google "bomber seats" or look for them on ebay. you can get a nice pair for $500

BTW a buddy here in Miami just got a buggy that aparently "wasn't driving the same" when he lifted the fiberglass off the pan the tunnel had split where it had been welded. The fiberglass was what was still holding everything together.
