Also, if you win a contest like this, you have to pay income tax and registration/sales tax on the appraised value of the winnings.
So, even if it was reported at a low value, say $10,000. For someone in a middle class tax bracket, you'd be on the hook for around $1500 in income taxes, plus state and local income taxes.
Then, when you register the vehicle, at least in my state, you'd be paying an additional 7% sales tax ($700) plus $85 in title and registration fees, plus whatever insurance costs. If they insure it like a regular second car, that could be over $800 per year.
That "Free" bus now costs the winner a total of $3085, plus insurance for subsequent years.
If you aren't into buses, and don't have the garage space, you take the cash and pay the taxes. $8500 in your pocket.
If they got a high appraisal, they'd be on the hook for lots more if they kept it, and lots more cash back if they take the cash. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Were they able to restore the original paint after removing the Jerry paintjob?
Or was it stripped and re-painted? _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

There is a bit of information and history missing about this bus. Here are some more pictures from a previous local owner. He owed two of these buses the 59 and the 67 21 Window.

Vinatage Auto Werks1, Please tell me what you know about that owner.
I know that Discover donated the buses to the church that repainted them back to an original look (from garcia job). Did this owner work for Discover? Please PM or post. Thank you for posting pictures. I would really like to get in touch with that owner.
Thanks! |

Repainted, Outside only, no jambs or interior. I am awaiting a phone call that should help with the actual details of the paint job.

I purchased both of the discover card busses back in 2001. The 5 7 standard you bought , had 19000 original miles and was insanely perfect. The other was If I remember a 67 deluxe. I have images. The person who won them from Discover donated them to a local church....I happen to find them there, a very serendipitous day for me as I was one of the millions trying to win them from Discover.
I still have the middle seat lower panel, which I know you are missing and the trophy they won at the Balloons show ! I would upload pics , but I don't know how to do in on the. Samba. |

Wow, I bet it had insanely nice original paint before they covered it with that hideous hippy paint job. Cool bus for sure. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Score. I don't think I like the paint on the '59. But definitely like the Jerry paint on the '67. Who owns the '67 now? |

Any pics before they painted it for the ad?
I would love to see how nice the OG paint was before painting it. |

Yes that is it. It had about 18,000 miles on it at the time, that is the original paint. |

Soo.... Are you going to strip it back to the original paint?? I bet they didn't sand it down before doing the hippy paint, but what about when they did the mango respray? If you could find out who painted it, you could ask them. |
