Samba badly needs a Like button...reading through these there were quite a few where I went: Yes, That!
So narrowed beams for sure, broke looking axels and fake patina defo. Cars that are trying to be passed off as "100 Percent original" when clearly they are not. And most of all, people who use the term "restoration" when clearly they mean "customization". _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.

I think in most cases they know what they are doing when they miss-use the word "restoration." It's called fishing for a sucker.
Like using the phrases, "completely restored," "Mint condition," "It worked las time I used it." Oh, and one of my personal favorite, "not tested but worked before removed." _________________ Pearl White 1966 Sedan

The PRICE what you have to pay for a decent bus let alone some hula skirted rustmobile. All that money does is bring out the bondo queens and their layers of fiber glass.
Might be showing my age, but my first bus/with a parts panel- cost me $300 au.- and we gave the panel away.
Then I see these build threads of these truly master fabricators and panel guys spending a gob on panels and getting a beautiful bus - but at what cost/Yikes _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

Absolutely. I guess sellers naturally want to get the most money they can but the high prices (especially the split window bus) are moving into unobtainable for the average buyer who wants one to keep and enjoy. And not to flip. |

On '72 and earlier Beetles (pre elephant-feet taillamps): Taillamps which are mounted either too high, too low, have mismatched heights, or twisted unevenly on the fender. Stand back several feet behind some Beetles at your next VW meet- there'll usually be at least one in the show like this.
Also, cars on the show field (of any type) in which the steering wheel is not pointing straight-ahead (just a twist of your hand is needed); and on Beetles where the bottom edges of the running boards are not aligned with the bottom edge of the F&R fenders. |

WOW really?
I'll think of you when I, just with a twist my hand, make the wheel cockeyed at the next show.
How about when the VW on the hubcap is not straight up and down or the valves stems are not all in line _________________ Rick

Totally acceptable for a hobby-based car show. Not acceptable for an indoor new vehicle car show in which vehicle manufacturers participate, such as the Los Angeles or New York Int'l Auto Show. In such shows the manufacturer often pays professionals to clean the cars, and prepare them on the display stands. Such attention to detail (along with both front seats having the same backrest angle, headrest height, front seat alignment, etc.) is becoming increasingly hard to find at auto shows. Even at some high-dollar outdoor collector car shows, "some" cars drive onto the show field/grass with plastic bags over the tires, to prevent grass getting into the tire treads.
As to the steering wheel, when you see photos of VW meets in VW magazines and the steering wheels are not level/straight, it detracts from the "presentation" quality. I realize that an owner is often not present at the car when a pro photographer takes some shots, and the photographer has the courtesy not to reach in and turn the steering wheel. Especially if the car is newer and has a steering column lock in which he cannot turn the wheel without the owner's key. |

You know, being a stock-lover, I have a long list of things that normally "bug" me, including the above. I guess now that they seem rare I bemoan such modifications or worse, hacks.
But I went to the Meet in the Middle show today, and seeing 150+ cars made them seem a little less precious and rare, and made me a little more tolerant of such personalization. There are plenty of stockers, so I should back off a little.
To each his own. Stock for me. |

I guess my biggest "pet peeve" would be a single Weber carb hacked into the removable rear engine hatch cover of a type 3. That ranks #1 to me, with those 4 tip "monza mufflers" being #2 (they're hard on the shins). I mean come on, spend a few bucks more, and install a set of dual carbs, and keep the engine stuff below the load floor. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
