I do apologize if this has been asked in the past. I looked but couldn't really find the info I was looking for.

I want to put an engine with a 12 volt flywheel into a car with 6 volt system.

I have a 36 horse engine with Porsche crank, rods, and 12 volt flywheel. This engine is balanced and blueprinted. I was informed by a renowned 356 mechanic that I would be best off not to remove the flywheel. He said that I should grind some of my bell housing and put a 12 volt gear on my 6 volt starter.

Here's the question: How much do you grind off bell housing?

Is the flywheel from a 912 Porsche? If so it would probably require grinding of the bell housing. If you can get a 356 flywheel, it would bolt right up to the crank and would be compatible with the 6V starter and no grinding would be needed. If the flywheel is a 12V VW flywheel modified to mate with the Porsche crank, it should fit fine but would require a change to a 12V gear on the starter. Personally I would look for a 356 flywheel as that is the cleanest solution.
