Still working on the undercarriage. Ugh Makes we wish it were easier for me to do a pan off, but I will have to work with what I've got. I am also working in a storage shed where there is no water accessible. That makes it tough as all I can do is scrape and grind and wire brush. I'll get it done, but had to move on to something else to keep me motivated. The inside of the car had a good amount of old glue inside. Have been working to remove all that and sand it down. Yesterday we got the foot well area done and shot it with primer. (I was dying to paint something) I know it's not much , but I am finally starting to feel like I am getting somewhere. This is definitely a good lesson in patience. Smile
Here is a pic of the glue I was dealing with...

You should just pull the steering column out and get it out of your way -- only a few bolts and it will make everything so much easier

Yes, that steering wheel will come down eventually.... I moved on to the engine compartment. That is now sanded and primed. I wish I could say I was doing this all by myself, but my boyfriend has been a valuable part of this whole process. He's been a very patient mentor and guide. Not to mention he has all the tools I need. Razz Thank goodness for him. Smile
We worked on the trunk area a bit today. Tons of nooks and cranny's there that are really hard to get to. Probably another few hours on that tomorrow and it can be primed as well. Smile
I have a question about the area of the body under the gas tank. In a pan off, that all gets painted with he car, the same color as the car. With the way I'm doing things I'm not quite sure how to handle it. It will need to be painted, but would it look alright if I just painted it gloss black in those areas?

Just joking.

To Azamy66. I doubt anyone will notice if you paint it chassis black down there. It would take a real nutcase to climb up there with a torch and check it out.

Black is okay with us if it's okay with you Amy, but here's another option for you to consider . . . spray can paint in the correct color . . . check out the third post on this page of this build thread . . . http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=524322&start=480

BTW . . . nice job you're doing on your convert!

Thanks for the suggestion 57Blitz. There is an auto paint store not too far from me. I will definitely look into possibly getting a can of my paint to finish that area. And what a great little thread you led me to. Smile Nice to see a young girl taking interest in VW's. And kuddos to her dad for mentoring her through it all.

Got the trunk area primed today. Amazing what a difference a fresh coat of paint can make. Cleaned up pretty nice. I tried a different primer on it. It looks really dark in pictures, but it went on nicer than the light stuff I used for the engine compartment.

Amy - driving home from work today, saw a nice orange-yellow Convertible driving north on 56th Street near Greenway, so you better get it running soon !!! The top was down.

So jealous. It was very much my goal, Cusser, to have it painted by the end of March, but I'm not sure I can pull it off. It may be Fall before I'm running about town with the top down. (Sigh)

Today was filled with cleaning and painting the front end under the gas tank. Decided to go with black. Still have work to do in that area though with repainting the front end components. Probably need to spend a few more hours making sure I've got as much grime off as I can before that.

Ii also had my mind set on cleaning up the wheels today. That was a dirtier job than I expected. All 4 where caked with probably 20 years of brake dust and grime on the insides. They cleaned up nice for the most part. I will paint eventually, but at least the dirty work is done.

Gas tank repaint success. The inside of the tank looked good, so I turned my attention to the outside. After wire wheeling and sanding I used a primer called Zero Rust and then finished it with black appliance paint. Looks good as new Smile

Nice, Amy. We have great day for this today, I'm off work today (I work at Scottsdale and 101).

But I'm replacing the oil pump and a valve cover gasket on a leaky 1998 vintage 198K Nissan Frontier today, maybe I'll get a chance to drive my Convertible later.
