How did someone steal the new locking gas cap I just bought off my Thing? I'm reluctant to buy another one if the come off that easy. Thanks, Kirk

Kirk, I would venture to say that you did not have it locked correctly. When I had my Thing, quite often I would think it was locked and it wasn't. Of course the other possibility is that someone had a key that fit it. (but I wouldn't think so)

By the way, how long did you have the cap?

I only had it a few days. I'm sure it was locked correctly because it was the first time I had locked it after gassing up and it did spin freely. I'm mystified because I live in a rural area with limited exposure. Thanks, Kirk

Kirk-
I won one of those (from the Thing Shop) as a door prize at the 2013 Kubel Treffen East in Dover, DE.

That's a mighty good deal. Very Happy
mondshine do you know what the HK means on the keyslot cover?

I have one. It can be a struggle to put the cap back on. Once I put it on with only one tab engaged. Luckily I noticed the problem before it fell off.

When I think of HK, I think of firearms.
The gas cap I have (from the Thing Shop) looks slightly different than that photo from their website. It does not have the HK logo on it, but if it did, it would probably stand for Hong Kong (or similar).
None the less, it's a Thing Shop locking gas cap just waiting for KirkY to show up in Branson.

Two years ago I forced myself into the habit of tossing my gas cap into the glove box whenever I refuel. Before that, in the 30 years I have owned my Thing, I probably lost a dozen gas caps; leaving them on fenders, gas pumps, etc. I always have a spare (I guess I'm just forgetful).

mondshine, when I was stationed over in Germany in the 80's and got mine "in trade" from a German Army 181, I asked at the VW dealer why it didn't say VW or 181 on it, and I was told that it was from Honda Korporation. Then I thought back to when I had been stationed in Panama and had a Honda SL motorcycle and the years that the cap wasn't permanently attached and hinged, they had those big screw on caps.

The locking gas caps do have the VW logo on the inside of the cap. They have a bus part number and Honda does not make them. They are made by a German company much like Bosch, Hella or SWF. I can't recall the full name but I'm sure its not Honda.

Glad it's not Honda. That would just be all wrong.

Some people put magnetic adhesive strips on the inside of the cap and then put it on the hood when they get fuel. Chances are you won't lose the cap even if you drive off without putting it back on.

I love mine! It's true it's hard to get on all the way sometimes... I've found if it's really hot out (90+ F) it's a bit of a struggle to get it on all the way. I'd guess it wasn't on all the way and fell off.

I got one too,

I think it's got 3 tabs on the top, I usually get one started at the bottom and
push it down and turn and check it before I pull the key out.

it is kinda tough to put on so it's very possible it may not have been locked down good.

Probably a stupid suggestion but maybe if you backtrack you can find it,

T

OOPS! Sorry I over reacted. I found the gas cap on the shoulder of a nearby dirt farm road I use. Apparently my wife didn’t tighten it enough the first time she used it. The one in Branson is available now. Thanks, Kirk

Operator error!! Wink

Glad ya found it!!

As aside, can you remove your key when it is Unlocked? I had the OEM cap on Our Thing, and the keys could NOT be removed with it unlocked. Thus, if ya forgot to put the cap back on, you'd realize it real quick when attempting the start the Thing to leave...

I cram mine in my pocket when fueling. Easy to remember you left it off when you feel it pressing into you butt. Crying or Very sad

On my first Thing I had the cap attached to the filler neck with some cordage. Don't remember exactly how I did that any more though.

To keep my gas cap with me, I ran a short piece of stainless window sash chain between the vent on the filler neck and the cap. A split lock washer with the same OD as the vent tube is looped through the end of the chain. The vent hose fits right over it. A key ring holds the cap on the other end of the chain. The length of the chain is such that the cap is clear of the fuel filler, but the cap cannot swing against the body or fender.
Anyway, here it is; time will tell if I keep this:
