My father in law asked me to post a question about his convertible rabbit. He is experiencing intermittent loss of power that feels a bit like a fuel issue but the mechanic he took it to (not a VW mechanic) could not figure out the issue. Usually, my father in law has to pull over, let it sit for a few and then he can restart and carry on. Not a lot of info I know, but any ideas? Thanks.

Okay, well if it's not been checked yet, I'd start out seeing if the transfer pump in the fuel tank is going out.

Main pump too; the two go hand-in-hand when failure of one is imminent. The main pump could be overheating.

Fuel pump relay is another suspect, along with the fuel pressure regulator (pull the vacuum hose off it; if fuel leaks out, the regulator is shot).

Additionally, replace the main ground cables and clean the secondary ground connections.

#1 purchase a new fuel filter.
#2 remove old fuel filter. beware of fuel under pressure, and it will spray.
#3 drain the residual fuel from the inlet side of the filter into a glass jar.
If there is any debris, it tells you a lot

#4 into a large container, you can check the free flow rates of the pumps.
jumper across the fuel pump relay for XX seconds and check the amount of fuel against it. If not within spec you have a pump problem.

If you found water or debris in the fuel, add some alcohol to the gas tank, and keep doing #4 until the water or debris no longer comes out.

(usually fuel problems in the CIS cars are related to a clogged filter. The filter element is so freaking fine to protect the fuel metering unit. Also, the filtration fibers will swell shut upon any water found, and cease fuel flow.)

Correct. All Cabriolets sold in the States from 1990-1993 were Digifant, which is quite different from CIS.
