Finished up the pass rear and needed to get my mind of current happenings so took some pics. I worked on the fender in the rear little bit. The problem is its an aftermarket cheap one so its not as rounded like the drivers rear. I will have to work on it a bit more. still rubs little but I will get that figured out. Also will prob drop the front down some more after I gets some air shocks on. Next year I have some plans to relocate the rear shock mounts. so I can go little lower.

So had some stuff come up and not really had much time to work on the bug. I have been trying to figure out what to do with the rear and I think I have that figured out. As for the front going to pie-cut the pan head. This should be fun. I hope it wont take that long but I am thinking the hardest part is making the steering work. Also after some thought and reading up I did a spot clean.
I just realized that it was bugging me and I could not hold out any longer.
So after I did little 3 stage wax job on the spot. I did not really spend that much time on it. There does seem to be some shine!
As for the rust.. I think I am going for the boiled linseed oil. I am going to wait for a really hot day to let it dry out really well. Hope to get some more stuff done. On side note I was going to order some parts to finish up the front but as things go out of stock so I will have to wait. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

have you tried some CLR like cleaner on the hood and fender? Or did you want to keep the rust look? looking great. A 69 in similar condition was my first car, youre making me really rethink my priorities. . . . _________________ 1980 2.0 Sunroof Vanagon |

I had a 70 as my second bug in high school. It was low too, just wish this one was in better shape. Though I am trying to get a 69 that this lady has in her barn. Same color same year that I have and it has pop outs and it strait as a nail, just no motor or tittle. I have been trying for months and she won't budge. My full plan was if I got that other one swap out everything to the other bug. So for now drive this one it like I stole it, well soon to be. LOL As for the hood and fender I might get the faded color matched and spray the hood and fender... Not really sure what I am going to do. Heck I might just drive it or find a hood and fender that color that matches. The other option is to find a front clip with hood and fenders. I missed a set that sold at the end of the bug show for $20 because they did not want to take it home. :/ Well that is the plan so far. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Well got a short update. flipped tie rods and installed lowered camber adjusters. well half installed. The stock one is stuck so its got some PB blaster sitting on it. For those of you who are thinking about doing this make sure you trim down the sleeves on the flip kit just a little so it does not stop your ball joint form bottoming out. Otherwise not a bad job at all and it should flatten out my rods. You can also change it back if you want to which I like. This pic is with the car up on stands and not laid out.

Well I started the pie cut. I don't know how long its going to take but prob will replace the brake master cylinder while I am at it. I have not seen to many pics of the job so figured I would take pics of the steps. I still have to do some math to make sure I will know how much drop it will give.
I think I am going to do 3/4 cut as close to the wall as I can.
It looks like from the back of the cut to the center of the beam is 12.875 inches. So the tunnel is 6" tall and with those figures I will have someone smarter than me do the math.
More to come will try to take pics of my progress. On a side note I am working on new mounts that I will be welding in the back to relocate the shock mounts. Still working on the stencils for that. I would not have dug into this but I am not going to make it to the bug show with the car so I figured I might as well start on it. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

So about 1.75" drop at the beam with a 3/4" pie cut? Thanks for working that out.
I kind of inherited a very crusty '69, and had plans on pretty much plagiarizing your build, without scrubbing off the moss. A couple of questions... I saw that you left the shock towers in the front, are you running shocks? Seriously, how is the ride? Have you considered flipping the trainling arms in the rear to compensate for the negative camber? Are you going to pie cut the frame with the body on? What about shortening the frame to pull the front tires back further in the wheel well?
Thanks for letting us follow along. |

Its actually 1.5 but it does not matter I think I have about 1 from the bottom of the beam to the pan. I left the shocks towers on the front so I can run air shocks. I am to old to run around like that all the time. The rear trailing arms I am not going to flip because of the offset of the wheels if was swing I would consider it. As for the pie cut going to do it with the body on the frame. I will be taking some pics of the process but as you can see my build is slow. The frame head not really and issue as far as I can tell it rides decent. It will be better once the pie cut is done. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.
