|
|
So it took a couple of days to find the tools. I am on a super tight budget so every cent counts. My boss gave me a 36mm snap on socket we had in the old tool pile, . A friend had the 3/4 breaker bar that he brought over yesterday.
It looks like the real deal when it comes to the 3/4 drive stuff. and it fits good too.
While my friend was at it he jumped up on it and see what it did. Flexed pretty good and did not move. He comes in at 275lbs. Enter the floor jack bar...
Got that one pulled with the giant puller so broke the tabs not bad.
The drum looks like it will be ok, just needs some cleaning and maybe a turn.
The other pass side was not as bad got the drum off with out breaking anything.
The drum on this side look fine too.
So slapped the drums on for now so I can move the car and put the butt end facing out to start on the motor. I am really excited to see what a bug does after sitting for 8yrs. I hope I have some time this week to fire it up. all the hoses are toast so will have to replace those too. What is there not to like about this pile! Oh sorry about the small pictures my resizer shrank the originals to small _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

I saw these posted somewhere and saved them, I thought they might be useful sometime in the future. Hope this helps...

Well not much going on cleaned up the seats.. For those of you who did not see them , they were pretty nasty.
Before:
So I took them to work shot them with 175deg pressure washer and scrubbed them down really good. Then washed them again and then again..etc
After.... Sport Seats by Dee.. (Yeah they are old but back in the day, nice)
Still need little clean up but like new! :p
Not much else going on pulled up some of the floor. pans look good so far. The carpet pinch metal on the sides is toast but the heater channels seem ok. I did not find any holes.
Here is the big hole. Pretty thin in some areas, might have to see about making a replacement or just buying one.
Oh yeah borrowed a small motor can from work. Need to clean the bay up and change the oil, so just picking away.

Fri I found someone to take the old gas form the tank was about 3 gallons. I had a short time to pull the tank and get it ready for them to take the gas. After I got the tank out and empty I got a good look at it. The inside looked good and the only prob spot was the bottom of it.
I also blew out all the gas lines and the gas that came out was not bad. I thought I was going to have to run new fuel lines and a new tank but it looks to be in good order. The rubber fuel lines are hard and cracked so will replace those. Tried to clamp one and it just broke because it was so hard. I was thinking of installing a valve under the tank with a new fuel filter, anyone done this? I like they way my 56 was back in the day. Is there a fuel filter in the tank? I know the older ones had one.
As for the pan head area I was sure I was going to find some rust really bad but it seems not so!
The beam looks strait too. Again I am lucky.
I can only see on the shock towers where the paint was just scrapped a little were the frame hit and must have snapped back. The upper right corner is prob the worst area for surface rust. It has not gone through will deal with that later when and if I detail the trunk.
Everything else looks pretty good though and I am happy about that. I will prob run the small tank till I get things worked out with the brakes etc.
Oh one other thing I drained the oil and it smelled like it had a little gas in it. I think its prob on the brink of breaking down. So far I took the bat in and some other junk I found in the bug to the scrappers almost $8 for parts _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Got the ground cable, positive cable and fully charged battery. The oil is changed and new gaskets on the valve covers. Oiled up the rockers and taped the valves to make sure they were not sticking. I hooked everything up turned it over by hand few times. Went to go start it, Dead silence...
I guess this is where the fun begins. It also looks like he rigged the ignition switch Happy days.. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Well chased some wires. That dumb button under the dash is the horn. Check few more wires and it turns over now with the ignition key. I think I am going to have to pull the fuel pump and see whats going on there. I will prob put the fuel tank back in with new hoses and put couple of gallons of gas in too while I am at it. Oh I found out they put a new starter on the car too, looks brand new. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Got her running for a little bit. The points were coated so sanded them off. Also that little tank was clogged or something. So ran to the parts store and got 1/4 inch braided fuel line and hook fuel tank up and filled it with a gallon. Checked the fuel pump and its working. I have fuel, Just need to figure out why its not starting up again. Prob go get some starter fluid and see what it does. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Well I wanted to run some 17" Radars but that is a pipe dream. If I had the ca$h I wold run wide five drum in the rear that you can buy, with disc conversion up front. There is a lot more wheels to choose from. So yeah for now going to stick to just the drums right now. I am using all my resources to buy parts. Found some aluminum scrap metal on the side of the road and took in a 100lb cast iron sink to the scrappers, it ended up $10. So for now drums need to be cleaned up a bit. Also got a $25 Amazon gift card from work, so got a brake hardware kit and rear cylinder. I just want to be able to move the car if I want.
One problem is the clutch pedal. The guy said it would not go into gear. Well there is a huge crack and it looks like they tried to fix it while it was in the car. I might try to find another pedal assy as the gas lever is frozen.
Got most of the floor pans cleaned up, just a lot of surface rust.
I need to get all the tar paper out before I let my son help. I am being very careful with gloves etc. and plastic bags. I found a small nest that did not seem like they were in there that long behind the kick panel. I will also be pulling the headliner because it smells musty like everything else. I am prob going to pressure wash the inside when we get some really hot days going.
So as far as I can see the pans are solid except the battery hole. _________________ 68 build that had been sitting for 18yr in a garage.

Well, picking at it here and there for 10 min or so for a week. I finally got the pedals and clutch working. I could not even move the throttle pedal with a hammer.
I welded the pedal up at work and also fixed a thin clutch puller that was wearing through. It looks like it cracking but I welded it up really good. If I have to next time I will reinforce it with some 12ga material. I just want to get this thing running so I can start on the front beam.

I thought about making my own shock towers and putting these on instead of the stock ones. I don't know how much effort I want to put into the front beam besides narrowing it. I like this one I put together at 4" narrowed. Soon as I get the beam out and get some real measurements this is just a rough model. I also moved the mounts back 2" to clear the air shocks so don't have to grind the arms.
