What if you just got some white vinyl pinstripe and covered the edge where it changes colors. Would be cheaper than having to re coat them and would probably look fine. It looks like where it changes colors is the worst part

I was going to wet sand it with like 2k grit then touch it up and clear coat it. a red pinstripe was suggested also. Might have to try that though see how it looks.

I was just checking out your thread, and looks good. I have those same wheels and wasnt sure if i was going to use them. But I really like the style of them and after seeing them cleaned up they look even better. Do you think the rubber will clear the rear fender ok. Thanks and keep up the good work Very Happy

I might have to roll the fender not sure. I am not going to put huge tires on the back so not really worried about it. The back spacing is a bit much but I think it will work. I will prob use a 185 to match what ever I use in the front.

Not much has happened. Wheels got messed up, tried one more time on one of the wheels.. Fail again. Sanding all the rims down and going Gloss Black. Sad They will still look good but not what I wanted.

I also did get the flashers to work and running lights. As for the blinkers, I have to take off the wheel to see what is going on. Not much time these days. Fixed few wires messed with the regulator and cleaned up some connections and grounds. I will post pics when the wheels are done. Hope to get them powder coated next week for the 3rd time. LOL Also got some grease to install the dropped spindles and repack the bearings.

Well finally got the wheels done. Black, and if my other two tone would have come out it would have looked really good. But these will do. Smile Just need some tires..

Fixing the turn signal switch, if you can buy one do it. I don't have $40 so I had to take it apart. The problem is there is a rivit holding it together. There are tinny springs and few other tinny parts. Took me 3 hours to get it back together but it all works now. The only problem now is my drivers running light stays on when I put the key in. Do you have any ideas? I think it might be grounding out some how.

I have been working a lot and I have not got the tires. I have the 19th till the 6th January off so will be working on it a lot I hope. Smile I can do a dry fit if you want. I am kinda curious my self to see what it looks like but prob will wait till I get my dropped spindles on that are sitting in a box right now. Sad

Oh no worries. Yah wait until you have everything ready. I'm hoping to do the same with my bug over the holidays. Same deal have spindles and adjusters sitting here. No time though lol. Good luck☺

Well finally got some time over the holidays I had about two weeks but ended up with about 4 days total. The parts have been sitting in a box for months. Also for those of you who are venturing on doing the ball joints. It was a royal pain. I had some nice tools but not vw ones so had to do some creative thinking. If I had the $40 I would have had them done ahead. That whole ordeal took a day to do.

It only turns a little tires are way to big where its sitting.

When I change the tires out with the rims I should be laying beam if I want.

The beam is not painted, its too cold and will prob do that during the summer. It all depends on how much time I have. Also I plan on getting some caster shims prob run a double stack with longer bolts.

I am starting to see how nice the rims will look.

The back wheel fender will have to be rolled I think. I will prob run 185s in the back.

I will have some meat sticking out that is for sure. The offset is a bit much but I think it will work. I could shorten the rear arms if I ever found the right ones to put in, but this is a budget build. Razz

I think with the offset of the rims and the narrowed beam it looks like about two inch offset. Tires will tell Smile 185/55/15 front and run 185/65/15 back.
I think the side shot is good to give you an idea of how its going to look.
Also I will be getting chrome lugs.

So next on the list tires, caster shims, alignment, lugs in that order. I am still under my budget for this build. I want to do some air shocks down the road, but right now no shocks Smile. It just sits in the garage. The goal is to drive it down to woodburn bug in this year. Opinions and suggestions welcome!

Hey Zodiac. Looking good. I got some.work done on my 68 as well. Narrowed the beam 5 inches. Put adjusters in and drop spindles. All new ball joints. Still have to do the tie rods and bolt the steering box back on. Put the wheels on to have a look and they're close. But i have 205 65 on them right now. I know that's a big tire but they are just on there to roll car in and out. Can never figure out how to post pics lol. But your bug is looking good can't wait to see the wheels on there.

I love the build, but, it is killing me that you have not washed it yet!! Those wheels look like the ones they used to advertise in the old JCW catalogs back in the 80's!

As far I can find out the are Jackman racing off road wheels. I have almost washed it but trying to keep it how I found it. The inside will be really clean, that is going to take some serious work though.

Well I wanted to run 3 clicks in the back and be able to run full size tires. I did not want to notch the plates because I did not know if the bolts would snap off on the fenders. Laughing So I cut the bump stop off and the mount for the rubber snub.

It looked like it would bind up so I cut a new line on the top being careful not to cut the main edge on the top.

And it still hits the swing arm.

What I am worried about is the brake line getting smashed or cut by the frame.

Finished cutting off the bump stop and grinding the stop flat.

It looks like it need some smoothing down with a flapper wheel but I was running out of time and I need it movable. Also rounded out the area where the swing arm hit the frame. I wanted to leave as much material as possible but still have some travel. If and when get some air in the back the shock towers are going to be cut off anyways. Wink

Here she sits. I am still worried about what tires will fit in the front. Being this low the 165s hit really bad and I can not even turn. I think part of it is the front end is pushed in a bit. I am going to see if I can test fit some 8 spokes that have the 165/50s on them from a guy in town that works at a store I go to.

Not much going on other wise. I still have to do the other side but now I know what I want it will go a bit faster. Also with some shorter oil shocks in the back and full size height it should cruse on the freeway pretty good at 60 or 65.

Hey Zodlaw. How did you get the camber on your front tires?? Did you buy the eccentric bushings for lowered beam?? I can't get it with my set up. And pretty much the same as yours. Just wondering if I have overlooked anything???

I have not taken mine in yet so I don't know. The good thing is they are only $20 and bolt on. http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C12-6612-10 What is your camber at? I would think its pretty close but I have never ran this low before so its uncharted territory. For some reason either they don't want to talk about it or not a lot of people doing it. As for the back I could not find any info for the double spring plates so I just figured I would document what I do for the next crazy. I am probably going to have to flip the tie rod ends too. I wish I could move a bit faster but I am on a shoe string budget. The caster shims are on the list too, did you put a set of those in?
