|
|
We were on our way for a vacation to Key West but are broken down at samba friend Steve's just North of Daytona FL with a bum trans. Desperately need a replacement trans Saturday for the '87 Westy so I can install in Steve's driveway and continue on vacation to Key West. Sending family by rental in the meantime.
Does anyone know of a used manual trans within 2 to 3 hours of Daytona FL? I'll rent a car to pick it up. Fingers are crossed. BTW the Vanagon rescue League app totally rocks!
Thanks,
Dave O
Edit, Alaric is bringing one down. See later post. _________________ Dave O

Wow literally last week I could have brought one for you by Samba ship from anywhere along the I-70 or I-80 corridors. I am home now though... If you need any tips for pulling the trans w engine in, or installing, I will be watching this thread. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

On the bottom driver side of the tranny there is a beveled edge in the large case section and that is where the factory STAMPS a letter code for tranny model ahead of some numbers that tell when it was built.
Codes that were used on USA/CA wbx 2wd manual trannys:
DU, ABD, ACW
The above codes will work interchangeably on 2wd WBX vans.

Does anyone know what markings need to be on a manual trans that will work for an '87? I have a potential tranny but he doesn't know what year bus it came out of. He's going to look for ID numbers and do an internet search bu I'd like to help that effort.
Only internet I have is my iPhone so web surfing is not very efficient.
Thanks.

UPDATE:
Found in tranny in Jacksonville, 2 hours away. That is plan C.
May have a tranny locally. Trying to determine if it is correct. Plan B.
Called Alaric. He was supposed to leave for FL with his son a day or so ago but was delayed until Oliver got over a temp. All is good now and he is prepping to leave. Fortunately he happens to have a spare tranny and is tossing that in his bus for me as a loaner. This is PLAN A!
Steve is moving in this evening and I'll help him move his stuff. Then we'll pull my trans later tonight. Alaric should arrive overnight late. I'll toss in that tranny in the early morning, go for a long test drive, and if all is well be on my way to Key West by noon.
My son and two friends left at 11am in a rental van for KW so they didn't lose much time at all. (Only $180 all total one way from Daytona to Key West, that was much less than I was expecting. )

Nice! Dribbling a little penetrating oil on the various bolts you'll be loosening? Got a 12 point for the CV bolts? Whatever you do, don't bend the shifter rod catching the lowering tranny on it. You don't want to try adjusting/indexing the shifter rods while on the road... Clutch slave bolts should get a penetrating oil shot for sure. If swapping starters, don't let the bronze starter bushing go adrift. Got longer bolts on hand for the mustache bar mounts in case you need to lower the engine during re-mating?
Can't think of any other caveats/tips. Sounds like you are in excellent hands. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

I like to use a section of pipe across the top of the engine bay, front to back, and a piece of rope to one of the engine eyelets.
Shiming up one end of the pipe to change the angle of the bolts to align with the transmission. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Thanks for the heads up on issues. Fortunately I've done this more times than a few. But tonight I realized that with my Subaru conversion the exhaust header must come off to pull the trans. I've always pulled the engine and trans as a unit previously....
I'm soaking everything in Kroil tonight and will remove in the morning.
Alaric got held up for 5 hours getting thru VA so they are grabbing a hotel tonight and will be here late morning Sunday.
All is still good. My son and friends (and wife Donna who flew in for a few days) are comfortably camping in Key West now and I will join them in time. _________________ Dave O

Well, then I hope this time goes smoother than any of the previous for you and that the cumulative lessons from them produce a reliable vehicle for you to complete your trip with.

It's so great to hear about those helping Dave out! And to show you what a stand-up guy Dave is as well, I had PM'd him about his LSD/locker tranny, not knowing that he was standed with tranny-related problems. (he did mention he had tranny problems on his way to Key West _sorry Dave fro the poor timing of my question )
Yet, he sent me his phone number to discuss the pros/cos of each. Now you would think that a tranny would be the last thing he would want to talk about right now, but he gave me great information with barely a mention of his current situation.
Hope all goes well soon! _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Woooo Hooooo!
Replacement tranny is in and all is well. I leave for Key West tomorrow morning.
Thanks to Steve and Alaric!
This was also a good lesson for my 11 year old son. He got to experience how you can overcome difficulty on a trip and make the best of it.
And for me I've now got a friend named Steve.
BTW, if you break down and stop at Steve's for help be prepared to paint the house, help him move, yada, yada.... he is a 'tough' host. _________________ Dave O
