greetings from No-Cal... I'm mike and i have a car problem... lol.. Not new to bugs but have been away for a long time.

Picked up this bug in a trade as a "sweetener.. from what i am told is a 68 vert body on a 58 pan.. its been sitting for around 5 years so i put some tranny fluid/PB blaster mix in the cyl's and and blew out all the fuel lines checked the aluminum tank (it was dry and clean thank god).. i know i will have to rebuild the carbs at some point but i just want to see if it i can get it to pop off at all.. see what i have.. It is supposed to be a 1900ish bus engine with a cam and stuff... but i am always skeptical..

I have checked over the wiring and put power to the fuel pump and it works.. i am going to change the oil too although it looks clean on the dip stick.. was thinking of taking tins off to make sure there are no mousey nests in there or something. Am I forgetting to check or change anything before i try to start it..? have started many regular engins after sitting for decades.. never a bug engine after sitting..

hopefully the link works..

Turn it over by hand a couple of times then fire it up looking for leaks and listen for clunks and bumps

Here is a pic of my engine after a few years of squatters

Didn't buy it... Got it in a trade pretty stoked.. Can't wait to go play in the sand... Someone put some money into it.. Hopefully it will run and I can check that box..

I may be stating the obvious but we can all over look the basics when we are trying to think big. After turning it by hand, Pull power from the coil and make sure the oil pressure light goes out when you crank the starter.

lol.. Nah.. I had to do some (never ending) wiring mods on my Roadrunner, which is my daily driver. Mopars take priority in my garage.. free VW's are last on my list.. haaha!

Although my youngest just informed me that he wants this car as his first car so that bumps it up the list a little.

It's not any different than any other engine just change the fluids. Start it. let it warm up if you can and then change the fluids again. If it's going to last you'll find out eventually. I wouldn't assume it's trash just because it sat for five years. Good lord.

Mine sat for a long time before I bought it. What made me decide to just tear int it was pulling a valve cover off and seeing rust. I would look their before say in f@# it. If its not rusty and it turns over half way decent, let er rip.

I'll revise what I said and say I would think its trash unless I had some obvious evidence of damage. I have heard nothing that would point in that direction. Valve covers are a simple clip to remove and I would hope he would at least see that.

I appologize if I sounded brash

The 1600 single port that is in my rail sat outside for 10 years. When I was having the card tuned I had painters do a oil change and Keith said there was a 1/4 of sludge in with the oil.... And yes I was driving it around the neighborhood that way..... And it runs great!!!!! VW motors can take a lot of abuse. Drain the oil fill it up and let it rip.
