Thanks, V-Wagen! I've another dumb question: In mechanical terms, what exactly is "lugging the engine," and why is it bad? _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Lugging the engine a slow RPM, like below idle speed. It is bad because it is not pumping enough oil to keep the bearings lubricated so it wears bearings out real fast. Also fan is not spinning fast enough to remove heat. |

British English to American English translation help for a 34PICT-3 please:
Brit: "slow-running adjusting screw" - is this the same as the large bypass air screw on the LEFT side of the carb?
Brit: "Slow-running mixture control screw" - is this the small volume control screw below and just behind the bypass air screw?
Thanks! _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

So i was looking through my box of old parts, and looked at my Dizzy,
it is a bosche, made in Germany, FJ4, but the numbers ends with 49.
So what kind of dizzy is that? is it a 009? (it is a DVDA) |

I'm not saying I need the feature, but could someone tell me if the 69 came with that device that automatically turns of the turn signal when the wheel is straight again?
First post, Bentley's in the mail, just picked up a 69 Type 1 this weekend to replace a 2001 Ford Escort that crapped out on me. |

Thanks Brian!
And could you please tell me if, with the 1600DP (which I think the '69 never came with?), extra vents are typically required in the hood? I appreciate it. _________________ '69 Type 1 1600DP |

Definitely required. Either that or decklid stand-offs. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

The PO says that my SB has hydraulic valves and they don't need to be adjusted.
Really? Never? |

Not the original engine. PO said he broke the original sometime in the 90s.
Is there any way to verify the valve types? I am happy never to adjust them, but I can't find much information on their care and feeding. |

hydraulic lifters sit at the pushrod end inside the crankcase... I don't think there's a way of confirming this through simple visual inspection.
look for a mexican engine case, an external cartridge oil filter (to prevent oil sludge or debris to foul the lifters)... those would be positive clues.
also, on a mexi engine the lifters would bleed oil out back to the sump when the engine sits unused for a long period of time, causing the valvetrain to clatter upon startup. the clatter would then disappear as the engine warms up and the lifters regain their adjustment. _________________ cars:

Hey all. Just bought the car and the speedometer doesn't work. PO assured me it only needed a new cable, which he had already installed but was just missing the C-clip at the rotor. I pulled the dust cap off and I can see the cable sticking out. I've been flipping through the forums and it seems that if the cable is sticking out the dust cap like that, something has already gone wrong?
I've jacked the car up and tried to adjust the cable from behind the wheel (and thus far I can't get the stupid wheel off because PO has anti-theft lug nut but I didn't end up with the tire iron for it) but it doesn't seem like there's anything for the square head of the cable to catch on; that is, it slides in and out of the hole in the rotor with no resistance no matter how I turn it.
Anyway, I bought the c-clips and I was wondering if someone could tell me if this cable is already a lost cause or if there's something I'm missing. I'd rather not buy another cable if there's something else going on. Thanks very much! _________________ '69 Type 1 1600DP |

The c-clip goes on after the dust cap. This search of the gallery shows plenty of pics of it on correctly:

I owe you vamram. Thanks so much; I'll start with the gallery next time I have a question like this. I'm thinking I can probably do this on my lunch break. _________________ '69 Type 1 1600DP |

It's not looking good; the end of this cable isn't grooved like the ones in the pictures. I don't even know where to seat the c-clip.
Any thoughts?[/img] _________________ '69 Type 1 1600DP |

Thank god I'm in the stupid question thread; is this speedometer cable not going to work with these aftermarket rims? Since the "dust cap" I have is for the aftermarket rims and not the original rim? _________________ '69 Type 1 1600DP |
