Maybe if you posted the VIN and/or the engine # somebody here could sort it out. Just because it's a 1973 engine in a 1973 car doesn't mean it's the original 1973 engine for that car. And just because the engine # says it's a 1300 from a VW delivered to a foreign market doesn't mean it's still a 1300cc motor. All of that factory stuff took place over 40 years ago. Just sayin... |
Well the vin # opens up a bigger can of worms. What the heck is a Type 133?
It starts 133282---- |

My brain isn't deep enough to figure that one out! _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

only the first two digits identify the type, while the third is the year. a VIN starting with 133 thus belongs to a '73 super, but this is no big news at this point. _________________ cars:

I thought the first #3 might designate a Super but I saw no mention of it in the VIN decoder here on the site.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php
No mention of it in the Beetle/Type 1 model numbers either,
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/modelstype1.php
and I didn't dig much deeper than that. _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

it's explained right in the general VIN page you linked:
Quote: |
Beginning in the 1965 model year (August 1964), the VIN/chassis number begins with the 2-digit model number, i.e. 11.
Refer to Models for the numbers |
then, in the model numbers page, you have:
Quote: |
131 2 door Sedan; Super Beetle |
you take the first two digits of 131, add the 3 for 1973 and voila, you have 133. _________________ cars:

Wasn't sure where to put this as they are trivial questions so here it goes.
I just rebooted the seats on my 74 super. Had to replace the seat back knobs and bought the square looking ones.
When did the square knobs come out? I always remember them being round.

Beetle was never produced in the states. But maybe they did in Germany when the German factories produced the last Beetle? _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

I have a 1972 Beetle. Just curious, does the hood have an emblem on it from the factory. The guy who had it before me did some mess up stuff so not sure if he got rid of it or just doesn't have one.
Thank you, Scott. |

Per the manual, that's the button for an auxiliary heater:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/71bug/page23.jpg
As I understand it, that was one of those Eberspacher gas heaters that was set up in the trunk. Similar to this one:

time for a stupid question: how do you put a bug on axle stands on all four corners? I've read here where to lift the front or rear axle with a trolley jack and where to place the stands, but what's the safest sequence to lift the whole car, i.e front, rear or side first? _________________ cars:

I always jack mine up in the front first. This way, I have the hand brake and car in gear to stop it from rolling as apposed to nothing in the front. I put my jack on the front axle, it lifts the whole car up, then I put jack stands near the wheels on the axle. _________________ 1975 Beetle 1600dp 4spd Daily Driver.

Thanks!!! Now my search for the button/knob begins....lol. If I can't find it I'll probably just plug it, my car has that opening. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle 1302S
