"I thought I had it in neutral... that suckers going the wrong way."
Just teasing Reminds me of the Jetsons mobile. Love it! I am only now getting more intimately familiar with internal combustion and you're making me feel like I shouldn't even bother and should just join you in the 21st century. _________________ 1971 Ghia coupe. Sweet work!
I've always dreamed of converting our ghia to electric, but I need alot of range to be able to get anywhere from where I live.
What are you expecting for range? What batteries are you using?
Thanks |

The project is coming close to first drive. Spent this week restoring the trunk lid license light and mounting it.
Next I replaced the anti-rattle buttons and put new felts in the doors, I was able to get them in by dropping the window out of the lift channel and sliding it down. The exterior side of the door was rusted so I treated it with MetalReady and sprayed it with Eastwoods anti-rust coating. I didn't POR15 it because of the tight fit on the felt connectors to the door.
Did a POR15 on the door sills to clean things up and mounted the hinges to the door. Then with the guidance of my friendly neighbor Carl, a pro body guy, we got the passenger side hung.
So now the driver door is waiting on the felt clips to finish, and of course they are out of them at KGP and AirHead. My rims are out being powder coated and should be here by Friday, another gating item. Shooting to hang the driver door on 7/7. Then it DRIVES to my mechanics shop to have the rear torsion set and front end alignment on 7/14 and I will be road worthy and start the shake down.
If all goes as planned, I will debut Karmann Electra at the next Cars and Coffee. _________________ 1981 Puma GTB http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7794566#7794566

Thanks Darrel, love working with it. This week was pretty frustrating. The wheels didn't come in and won't be getting those felt clips until Wednesday. Been working on the layout for the interior and exterior motor splash. I have the top two pieces mocked up and here a shot of that:
Now I have to come up with a cover for the 9" round by 14 in long motor. This should fit in the wind shadow of the transmission rear mount. May re-purpose some semi mud flaps or use 1/8" ABS, not sure yet.
The top two piece will be 1/8" ABS and covered in the same material I used on the floor pans.
Good news is, I put the wheels back on and checked out the rear and the car used to lean to the drivers side, now it doesn't and I'm happy with the stance. This is the first time it has been loaded with the traction pack. I'll be putting the rear sway bar on next week. Here's the current profile shot.

Made big progress this week. Got my faceplate in and mounted the JLD404 in the radio space. Think of the JLD404 as a gas gauge that measures the battery pack state of charge.
Sent my templates for the motor splash guard and boot area side covers out to be fab'd up in 1/8" black ABS like the faceplate.
Hung the driver door after putting in new felt strips and anti-rattle buttons. Disassembled front and rear bumpers for restoration.
Put seats in the car for the first time since 5/28/14.
Tried putting in the rear sway bar but it was the wrong one. Ordered new one and should be here this week. Tried shipping it back and it would cost $70 and the part is $100, ate it.
Rims are still out to be powder coated and waiting for those now.
I'm running out of pieces to put back on . I still need to tackle the bottom of the floorpan, clean it up and put something on it for protection.
Still shooting for the Cars and Coffee of the Upstate on July 25th as my first event. I bet I'll be the only Ghia there, and the only Electric there. _________________ 1981 Puma GTB http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7794566#7794566

That is not a spring - it's a rod that attaches to the upper release knob shown in the last picture of the manual page there. I have to use that rod to push the seat forward on my coupe because the knobs are MIA. The other option is to stick a screwdriver in there to push the lever down.
Nice build, BTW. I'm planning to install the AC-50 combo from EV West in my vert next summer. It'll be going through body & paint over the winter. I'm collecting parts, designing some of the glue electronics, and testing some 18650 cells in the meantime. Cool to see there's active interest in the VW community, I was a little unsure whether electric conversions would be met with mild interest or considered sacrilege! _________________ 1970 KG Coupe
