We did a bit more gentle sand blasting to remove the primer, and got two of the three aftermarket belly pans off.
We had not been able to pull out the main harness from either the front or rear. Several posts had suggested there was some type of tube the harness ran in and they get rusty causing this problem.
Once we got the center belly pan off we saw no tube, but instead a thick metal tab much like that seen on the fan housing to hold the wires in place. The tabs have a major grip on the harness!
Here what looks like a tube is just the vinyl covering on the harness as it exits the tunnel on the right side frame rail just past the front crossmember:
Then it just runs inside the right side frame rail and is held in place with the heavy metal tab until it enters the rear frame rail tunnel where it goes up over the rear axle.
The tab is an 1.5" or so to the rear of the hole in this picture. I don't know if the hole should be there but it looks like a factory one. The hole is in the frame rail between the second and third top hats.

unless the early bus are different this is how the wire harness is on non-belly pan bus
buses with belly pans (deluxes, sunroof, double doors) should have a tube for the harness so you don't have to take off the belly pan just to fix the wiring _________________ '60 15 window walkthrough

The obvious reason there is no tube......the bus was not an original sunroof.
Hopefully a 15 window, semaphore bus, however with this much "wrong" even that comes into question.

Absolutely no doubt it is an original sunroof bus.
I have a birth certificate which indicates 23 window deluxe, all numbers match up between the one stamped on the plate and the one stamped into the engine compartment. The transmission, front axle and bulkhead (frame) number all line up with the info in the technical section.
All the paint is off the outside and most of the inside roof and there is no evidence anywhere of a graft.
The belly pans were aftermarket and a couple of the outriggers and possibly the front crossmember have been replaced so I suspect if there is a tube in a sunroof bus of this year, it was lost to the previous repair. |

Yes, the whole front nose skin was replaced. We have pictures of the bus with that piece off. the inside of the A pillar shows no seam. |

I should ask also should the main wiring harness have spade connectors? The semaphore/domelight portion does not have spade terminals so I assume the main should be the same? The fuse box is a screw terminal one.
It looks like the main harness has been replaced in this bus since it has spade terminals.
I bought a new wiring harness for a 1957 euro bus from Bob at wiring works and it does not have terminals either. |
