Thanks for the welcome. I'm loving how the red interior has turned out. I agree on the carpet, I couldn't believe that I found a kit here in OZ without having to order it and getting it at a show special price made it even better. Wasn't to hard to cutout for park brake and auto stick plus don't notice the cut for the clutch either. Thanks.
Have reassembled the passenger seat and installed. Will take pics tomorrow during the day of the results. Very happy.
Here is a different pic of when I finished installing the back seat and drivers.

Mike mine is a RHD but wouldn't the cable length be same for either drive side? If it is spare and you are willing to part with it, I would love to buy it thanks. |
The parts book isn't calling out a LHD or RHD. But, it is calling out a length of the guide tube (conduit) for the cable (115.75, 85 1/32, 70.5 inches). If you can give us a length, we can tell you which cable length you need, since 3 are called out (early and late). I would certainly hope that VW mirror imaged the latch assembly and cable set up. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

LHD and RHD are the same. I have a NOS early "LHD" one I bought from Germany, exactly that same as late notch RHD.
There are 2 different types though, early and later type iirc. Early has ball handle and has a metal flange and gasket where it attaches though the body.
Late has "D" shaped handle but I am unsure how it goes though the body.
Reason I used early on late car is notch still used many early parts right to 73 but SB and FB were different. So you'll have to find late model cable.
LHD and RHD are the same coz the fuel flap is on the right side obviously! _________________ The best of VW engine development!

We're talking about hood (bonnet) release cable, not fuel door cable. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

oops! my bad, dylexia, read fuel for some reason.
Anyway, the bonnet cable is same as far as I see, LHD and RHD are symmetrical with those cables. The lever is mirrored and will need a RHD specific one if needing the lever.
forget finding a cable. 2 options, 1. get a auto cable maker like this mob to make you a new one.
https://vault2.secured-url.com/ShopSecure/autocables/CarMakeList.asp?CategoryID=11
2. if you want authentic looking one, reuse the inner wire and replace the often cracked conduit with SMC nylon pneumatic hose, 6mm OD. its almost exactly the same as original if you choose the white hose.

Thanks guys, yes it is for the hood release not fuel.
The wire is broken off, at the moment I pull on the conduit to open the hood, it has a bit of rope tied to it.
I did drop into a vw mechanic yesterday and he says for ones with the glove box lever for the hood if they can't find a replacement they use another type of release hidden under the dash. If Mikes cable is not suitable I will go down this path.
I'm guessing to work out the conduit length I need to remove it from the car to measure, or is their another way?
Thanks for the help. _________________ My 71 Squareback (Sold!): http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=591450

where did the wire break off?
If the lever is fine, you should be able to just get new cable with conduit made up locally, improved in fact as modern day cables are heaps better than what vw used back then. it will make the bonnet way easier to open from greatly reduced internal cable friction. _________________ The best of VW engine development!

A couple of weeks ago someone created a Facebook group for VW owners in my local district. Then a week ago someone decided we should have a meet up, so on the weekend we had our first gathering. Was a good turnout of 10 and a few joining in along the cruiz. With several not being able to make it on short notice. My mate and I turned up in our Squarebacks (his is the 73 orange one) was an awesome time meeting other VW lovers.
Our first meeting point, introducing ourselves
Heading out of carpark
One of the stops along the way
Cruising around our district
Loved every minute, was trying to get my mates square and the Panel Kombi behind me in the selfie
Behind some of the Beetles
