I did some cleaning where the 2nd area for the number would be and I found the vw stamp followed by 2j25880, the j might have just been a 0 though _________________ 63' beetle, stock 1200cc, 12v, daily driver but a project |

Probably a Zero, that.
Hard to say exactly what lineage your engine has. With engines that have been through the remanufacturing process, it's hard to say what's been done inside unless you examine each and every part.

Oh it's not a 36HP, you already proved that in your photo of the engine number. 36HP engines don't have a removable generator stand! That's why I mentioned that the photo I posted of that 3283961 number was impossible - that number would have been on an engine that looked like this:
Even if it was a prototype 40HP (known as the "bastard" 40HP) which was still rated 36HP, but looked like a 40HP, those didn't start until 3400000. Thus that number had to have been custom stamped onto a factory blank block. The numbering is a bit uneven as well...
Now what you find inside the engine might be weird stuff like 77.5 or 80mm piston/cylinders. You might find the distributor drive shaft hole has been recut and spacers added. You might find the case has had camshaft bearing shells added (if there's a "P" stamp by the case half just above the pulley, then it probably will). You might find the oil pump has been reworked from 6mm studs to 8mm. Stuff like that.

I know of a P stamp and an O stamp, but not an S...
I already posted an example of a P-stamp above...
VW continued to use the P-stamp after they started milling off the original number during the reman process:

Looks like a backwards D and a 621. The S is unlike any factory stamps I am familiar with. I don't have any idea what those are. |

The VW-reman engine I have in my 62 now, that's a 61 block, but inside I found cam bearings and reworked for 8mm studs on the oil pump. However one thing VW did not do was clearance the block for modern thick-headed lifters. That's how I got the engine, previous builder gave up when he fired it up and heard CLACK CLACK CLACK - he thought it was a rod and parked the car it was in, and never came back to it. Years later I got the engine, fired it up, heard the noise. Took it apart and checked, sure enough one case half didn't have the specified clearance. I fixed that, and reassembled the engine (taking extra time to balance the rods and piston weights tighter than I ever had before on a 40HP) and have ran it for many years now.

I have a number 1 stamped where your P is. What does that mean? It is a 65 40hp. |

I have to admit that I have no idea what that means. It sounds like one of those things you'd have to ask whomever stamped it on there in the first place. |
