My VAG-COM is on it's way from Ross Tech. My GTI is at the end of it's 36k free maintenance schedule. The next scheduled maintenance is the 40k service which is the DSG Trans fluid/filter change, oil change, tire rotation.
Knowing at the time I purchased the GTi, service was going to be pricey ($350-$700 depending on the shop) I researched the feasibility of DIY service. It became immediately apparent that VAG-COM with the VDCM is a tool that I need in my tool box to do the job successfully. The DSG service is pretty straight forward and is no more complicated that an oil change. The rub however comes in when you have to determine the tranny oil levels at an operating temp of between 35-45 degs c. I considered doing it without a VAG-COM but why take the chance of messing up an expensive transmission.
My initial outlay for a DSG service kit, VAG-COM, oils, filters and a homemade fill kit ( made from a garden sprayer Cool ) is about $450. After I do the next DSG service at 80k the VAG- COM will have paid for itself. Plus I like the relaxation and satisfaction of doing this stuff myself.
I'll update this in the next few weeks and let you know how things went. Perhaps I will even include a couple of pic's.

Success!!
Time constraints resulted in no pics. Pretty easy. DSG fluid change much like a regular oil change.
