The manuals say 2 1/2 quarts with no mention of a filter? I drained my 59 with a later model Brazil engine and it looked like 4 or 5 came out. After draining and replacing the filter and adding 2 1/2 quarts the oil didn't even touch the bottom of the stick? It's a chrome after market stick but how could it be off a good 3 inches??? Thanks!

Do you have a deep sump attached? And a full flow oil filter? This would add at least 1-1.5 quarts of oil.
The fact that you say you "replaced the filter" makes me think this is what you have

if it has a filter it needs more. Are there long hoses to the filter or is it screwed onto the oil pump?probably needs another quart.

that's an aftermarket sump. it uses about 3 quarts by itself. Just fill it up to the full mark on the dipstick

It's a Scat 1.5qt sump, so put in 3.5 quarts and top up after checking the dipstick.

Might take less. Just measured it. It's 10 X 9 and only 1 1/4 thick. Probably the reason I was getting blow by as it being overfilled. Couldn't find one listed that size?

well how ever much it takes to be within fill line on stick ,...if its a spin on filter start engine after oil change let it run a few minutes , turn offf ,,in 5 minutes recheck oil stick..

Ok the stock engine is 2 1/2 quarts, this sump looks like the 1 1/2 quart. So how about if I go with 4 quarts and use that as the full mark on the stick? The chrome stick that's in there is probably for an engine without a sump. It measures 6 inches.

I could be wrong , but even with the stock stick and the added sump, you should go to the fill line on the stick , ....if it was any longer , the fill line would sit at the same spot as stock....

The existence of a deep sump has nothing to do with the length of the dipstick, since the max oil level will be the same in either case (just the quantity to get to that height changes).

As you say, try 4 quarts and check the oil level on the stick - if it needs a little more to get to the oil level up to the full mark, then put a little more in.

I'd hate having my dipstick chopped down.

5.3 pints = 2.65 = 2-5/8 quarts

Some people use small ramps to be able to get under the back of the car to change the oil. That's not a good idea because the engine is not level and it doesn't allow all of the oil to drain completely. It always a good idea to let the oil drain until only a few drips are coming out.
