I've got these in my 60 double cab and they are awesome. They use your existing lenses, and bezels so from the outside you can't tell, but inside they replace the whole housing. Going to install in my 61 camper also. SUPER bright. And relatively cheep. This was the best price I could find on them on the web.

This bulb looks like the best led replacement for a dome light, or an "up to '57" license plate light bulb.
From what I can find, the original bulb is a 4410. |

I just ordered a pair for my splitty last night. I'll post comparison pics once they arrive. My order included all exterior lights except headlights. Details to follow. |

Here's a list of the LED "bulbs" I ordered for a 12V '58 Single Cab with (Barndoor) 3rd brake light & festoon license plate bulb, and add-on Hella reverse lights.
Front turn signals - 2 x Amber LED
Rear turn signal/brake lights 2 x Red LED
3rd/center brake light - 1 x Red LED
License plate light - 1 x Natural white LED
Reverse light bulbs - 2 x Cool White LED
Once I get the free time, I'll post pics. |

|
|
I spent the evening evaluating the light output of the bulbs vs the LEDs. In summary, don't waste your money on the Amber LEDs and don't necessarily follow the recommendation to order RED LEDs for RED brake light lenses.
The first test was simple. Ambient light was blocked from a light meter and the LEDs and bulbs being evaluated were placed in a fixture that always held the bulbs an equal distance from the light meter. Instantly, the amber and red LEDs fall short.
The second test was just to see the max that I could get through the lens while moving the light. The lens was fixed, the bulb was moved around to get a maximum reading.
For the next test, the bulbs and LEDs were properly fitted into the housing.
After realizing the incandescent bulb produced a hot spot at the center of the lens, I moved the light meter off center 4" to see how the readings would change.
And just so you can see what I mean by hot spots - these two images show the incandescent bulb's hot spot.
Compare that to the lack of hot spot with the LEDs.
And here's the reason why. You can see the filament of the incandescent bulb is nearly parallel to the housing. I checked other bulbs I had and this is a consistent assembly trait across the bulbs.
Compare that against the LED which is definitely NOT parallel. And, when compared to the other 1156, the LED alignment was inconsistent.
In summary:
I'm returning the amber LEDs for a refund - no exchange!
I'm returning the red 1157 LEDs to exchange them for white 1157 LEDs.
I'm returning the red 1156 I intended to use for my 3rd brake light because its light output sucks. I won't run the 1156 white LEDs, because they're too long to fit behind the brake light lens.
I'll run the white 1156 LEDs as reverse lights, as planned.
Final note - if you've read the that you shouldn't run white LEDs for brake lights, see if you can identify which photo is an incandescent bulb and which is a 7000k cool white LED.

I have these LED tail light inserts and they work great on my 6 volt system (and I had NOS buckets to compare them with)
Here are a few pix.
Back side of circuit board
Front side of lights
Light installed (these directly replace the original tail light buckets and even use the original screws)
NOS tail light bucket with normal bulb (6 volt). This is the running light.
LED tail light insert (6 volt). This is the running light and the brake lights are much brighter.
New LED lights shining in bright daylight.

They're Unmistakably bright, easy to install, and the Customer service they give you is Super friendly!
They also make 'em for Bugs... |

I just placed an order with Mr.Birk for a set of these LED's, I should get them in a couple of weeks. Mine will be 12 volt, I will be sure to snap some before and after shots to see the difference. |

Do those current LED arrays have enough resistance to heat up the blinker box?
(pun intended) |

Yes, I did not have to get any extra flashers. They worked fine, and I have LED 1156 or 1157 in the front. Whichever is the old style turn signal bulb, only LED. So that's the whole Bus on LED, no extra flasher.
This Company also has them in snowflake style for older Bugs... |
