Anyone with a corporate job ever gotten grief for being grimy at the office? Oil stained clothes? Smelling like gas? Etc?
I sometimes run home over lunch and will do a quick repair... last year, i changed a fuel filter and got a nice fuel spray before having to return to the office for a meeting. Here was how the meeting opened:
Girl in the meeting, with a strange look on her face, looking around the room with her nose in the air:
"Does anyone smell gas?? Not like a fart.... but like gasoline?"
Me: "uh... that's me. I was changing a filter over lunch, and got a face full of gas"
Girl in the meeting: " Yeah, you reek of petroleum"
Me: "Thank You" _________________

I work from home, and if I don't answer the phone right away when the boss calls the message always starts, "when you're through messing around with your bug".... |

Back in the 90's I took a co-worker home at lunch time to hold a wrench,
because I needed a third hand to replace a fuel pressure regulator on my '78 Convertible.
We didn't come back dirty, but we were about an hour late getting back to work! _________________ Good Luck

I've met with clients to discuss insurance with cuts and beat up hands. No one has ever said anything, but if they did I would give them the old.. "Nothing like weekend home renovation projects!" line! Not everyone can understand nor appreciate working on classic cars. |

I learned it's NOT a good idea to take your drain oil to the recycling center while wearing a white shirt and a tie.
I even had a helper. We had about 40 gallons of drain oil in various jugs and bottles. The recycling center has a big tank they insist you pour it into and then your empty jugs can go in a different recepticle.
We got almost all of it in and were still clean. Then one jug had to give a big burp and both of us were instantly COVERED in nasty drain oil. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

I meet clients all the time with beat up hands and scratches on my arms....its always a home renovation project unless I know them and they know about the VW'st; but then, I work for an architect. Gas, oil and grimy nails don't fly. _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

My reason for asking was that i did a transmission flush and refill over lunch yesterday... had time to shower and change before returning, but that was after I managed to get some trans fluid in my hair, face, and in my left eye... tons of GoJo and a shower didn't get rid of the smell...and my eye looked like someone landed a right hook... i managed to fly under the radar and no one said anything, but it made me laugh and realize that it has been a fairly regular occurrence. _________________

Hmm… I troubleshooted a no-idle issue on my '69 in a tuxedo last year. Idle solenoid was disconnected for some reason. But it took me a while- and I'm lucky I had my old towel to lay out back! _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

You guys seriously need to get Boraxo powdered hand soap. I am a professional ACVW mechanic and get totally covered in VW poop every day and that stuff sends me home looking like a work a desk job. It is a truly amazing old product. _________________ air-cooled or nothing for me

I always wear nitrile gloves now. Partly to keep the oil off my hands, mostly to keep the oil and solvent from soaking the band-aids.
Best comment I got was from a woman at the bank, I was covered in solvent, from magnafluxing. She said "what is that? it reminds me of mexico".
Used oil has so much carbon in it, stains you arms dark. I used to get tired of people asking me if I'm a mechanic. I'd tell em I'm a chimney sweep. |

Friend of mine got a bit of grief for reeking of alcohol in a meeting the morning after a night out. He hadn't even slept, and was still pissed. While trying to sober him up we found a half a chicken breast in his shirt pocket. Fell out of a chicken sandwich he had the night before. _________________ 1973 1303 with AB-motor - sporadic

Boraxo! I'd forgotten about that! Yeah that does the job.
Lava soap does pretty well, as does Dawn dishwashing detergent.

Reading all of this makes me glad I work a blue collar job and don't need to look good for work. I am a carpenter, so I am usually scraped up and covered with dust during the week, then I get more scrapes and covered with grime on the eves/weekends. _________________ nothing |
