Location?
Kroc in Vancouver could set you up. He ports heads and builds custom engines. |

Where are you located in Canada? Maybe we can suggest a reputable builder near you. Shipping across border can be a pain sometimes and usually ends up costing you more. |
Yes, the border can be a hassle but sometimes necessary to get quality.
I'm in Vancouver. Do you know who's got a good reputation for building performance engines like this in western Canada? |

I can't seem to find a "Kroc" in Google. Do you have contact info? |

Darren Krewenchuk. Awesome engine builder and head porter. Likely the best one we have in Canada. I get Darren to do all my heads for my engines. You're lucky that he's in your backyard so to speak. _________________ 53 Canadian standard oval

Gets expensive real fast. Can't have a fast car for cheap and have it reliable if you skimp on items you need.
*gearbox to handle the power
*intermediate mount for transmission= prevent wheel hop etc.
*rear swaybar for your IRS (not needed but fun to have)
*KYB gr2 (Excels) front and back
*CB 2" beam or spindles...depending on height
*better wheels and tires
*3/4 swaybar up front (NEEDED)
*better brakes are nice
*gauges to know what the hell the engine is doing!
Another idea is to build a smaller engine that is still fun, but not need the extra stuff like a gearbox and better brakes etc. A well built thick wall 1679, 1776, or thick wall 1835 would still be plenty of fun and strong, reliable motors.
I also have a built KG. They are fun and also feel more dangerous than a bug! Take safety precautions. |

Good thoughts! I was wondering about the surrounding add-ons that would be needed too.
I was planning on better wheels, swaybars and shocks for handling. It already has the stock front disc brake, which I'm hoping will be fine for now.
I didn't anticipate the gearbox and transmission mount. Do you have recommendations for those? And cost ballpark?
I don't want to clutter the interior with gauges, though. This shouldn't feel like a drag racer, but a weekend beach cruiser.
Maybe a lower cc configuration would be better?
Db volume is really important, too. Will a 2110cc be much louder than a 1776 or does it not make much difference?
Do you know of good engine compartment sound baffling to mute it too? |

Drop a 2056 Type 4 in that thing, with the right cam and carbs it will out torque and out last just about any Type 1 engine for the type of driving you'll be doing. And there's nothing wrong with hydraulic lifters, the people who don't like them don't know how to use them. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

From what I've read, Type 4 engines seem great, but also twice the price. No? |

If you can get a core engine cheap, the build doesn't have to be any worse than a T1. I think I paid $50 for an old Bus engine, and put another $1,000 into it. Wasn't too bad, I just can't stop modding the silly thing. _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

is the 73 ghia gearbox the same as the 74? if so you won't need to mess with it if you drive with half a brain and don't do burnouts or try to launch the thing. you also won't need different trans mounts. Just make sure the ones you have are good or replace them. it all depends on how you plan on driving it. also, the ghia front disks are fine, I put beetle front wheel cylinders in the rear brakes to add a little boost to the rear drums. _________________ Riley
