I think of the running boards strictly as an ornament, giving the aesthetics of the side lines continuity from the front to the back. The Type 1 looks finished with the running board in place, but there is more than one way to do anything.
I say, leave it off if that suits you. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

The rear fender of your beetle takes enough stone/rock damage kicked back from the front tire with running boards in place. Remove it and you'll be getting many more chips out of your paint. |

Please do this- remove one board- then jack up that side of the car. Lay on the ground and look up. The reveal of door seal and door bottom, the bottom edge of the rear quarter panel and the leading 2' of the rear fenders will all be exposed. If they are in good shape now- just wait a couple seasons after pummeling them. Yes, I am pro-running board, and I vote. _________________

I have seen running boards removed and sheet metal used to cover the heater channel. A couple of those folks also welded/body filled the holes in the fender used to mount the running boards. I also bought a VW once with check plate aluminum running boards. They were stiff enough to use as steps to enter the car. The man I bought the car from has fabricated them very nicely.
It is advisable to use gravel deflector shields on both front and rear fenders to keep from beating the paint off them. |

DON'T Bondo over the holes! You may want to put running boards back on once you discover what happens when running without them.
If cash is a problem, buy a cheap set of mexican boards. They'll be OK for a while.
Keep in mind your running boards are the way they are now because of the job they do! All that stuff beating them to death so they rust away will be beating on the rest of the car if you remove them.
So think of the running boards as a sacrificial part that you need to throw away every 10 years or so. It proects the rest of the car. Remove them and you will be throwing away doors, quarter panels, rear fenders.... _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Beetles without running boards are like chicks with beards, just wrong!
Buy a cheap set new or 2nd hand and paint them before putting them on. They will last for years! Better to educate your buddies that the boards are not for stepping on. _________________ 1962 Gulf Blue Patina Deluxe Beetle
