I have the body off my 1973 Super Beetle Convert. My question: Do I install the engine in the frame assembly first and then lower the body over it, or do I put the body and pan together first and then the engine back in?

Your choice. Engine is easier with the body off. Body doesn't have to go as high with the engine out.

^^^ and it makes cool construction pictures! And..., if you're so inclined-you can go pan racing down your street before reassembly.

You can also split the difference.

Install the body with the engine out , then get the engine under the apron with the shroud off. After the engine is under the apron ,install the shroud and bolt the engine to the transaxle.
