I've spent a lot of time looking through the Samba. I have the later brake calipers on my 1973 Ghia. The right front one is sticking. I believe the master cylinder needs to be replaced, but I may rebuild the caliper as well. Is this a relatively simple job on the late calipers?
I can't find a modern caliper that someone has specifically recommended that would easily fit, or as far as I understand. Does anyone have a recommendation for a new caliper for the '73-'74 model?
Thanks

What is the condition of your flexible brake line? An old line can cause the caliper to stick. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

mbach,
If you have already checked the flexible line like NOVA said and are sure it's the caliper, I would cast my vote for the replacement that Darrel posted. I just rebuilt the calipers on mine and it was a total pain in the ass; I hassled with it for weeks. Well worth the 30 dollar cost difference to replace vs. rebuild if you ask me.

Wow, super speedy replies!
I have not inspected the lines, which I will do.
Just making sure, the 73-74 late calipers are different, is the mounting the same? So if I go new, I want to be sure they will fit.

Changed master C and one brake line which was definitely bad, bolted up the new brake calipers and bled them. Problem is they are a little thicker and my wheels rub them, AAARG I guess I need wheel spacers, but how much space is required? Obviously so they don't touch, and they only just rub slightly, on part of the wheel, maybe it can grind a little off? |

Figure out how much interference there is - then find some oversized steel washers at your local hardware store and install them between the hub and the wheel. Cheap and easy spacers. _________________ 71 Ghia Coupe - stock body - no rust! Powered by a 2110 W/Dual HPMX 44's - Rancho Pro Street Transaxle - A/C by Gilmore
