Has anyone heard of or seen an aftermarket solution to make the middle seat adjustable?

Was thinking about putting installing a del mar retro bed in back but would like to keep my middle seat in but need to slide it up at least 3"

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks guys.

just the other day
i was re-reading an old thread on
the original

zee hinges (made by zee-products)

most of the pics in what "was" a very good thread are gone but

there was some talk about a hinge for the middle seat
so that it can move foward to accomadate the rear bed

do a search for z- bed

youll find some info

but if you happen to find some good pics of those middle seat hinges
let me know....

Maybe now would be a good time to get out the old thinking cap and design what you need. There used to be a saying about necessity being the mother of invention, or some such thing..........

From what (little) I know, you can turn the back row into a bed without moving the middle row forward. I'm sure you could engineer something for it.

Ok I'll keep searching around. Maybe I'll have to rig something up. Was thinking about utilizing a marine type slide and lock, used on sailboats since they are low profile and rated for heavy loads.

I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks guys.

This is the z-products solution. Not the most convenient since you need to unbolt four 17mm nuts to move the seat forward. Probably not the safest either since the brackets are held on with hose clamps. I never drive with the seat adjusted forward. I'm not sure the super rare middle seat seat belts would work with the seat moved forward

Thanks for the pic, that gives me some ideas.

I saw a website once that makes custom length vw seat belts, I have my original middle seat belts but they are a bit beat up.

I'll have to dig it out for pics but I have a short middle seat that someone hacked off it's legs and added a slider/recliner mechanism, the welding looks like ass but it reclines to a full flat position and slides forward to make a lumpy bed. The mechanism looks like something you'd buy at a custom van supply store in the 70's, the upholstery would have had to come off for the welding, if you don't look too close at the welds it looks almost like a regular seat until you play with the little lever on the side.
I ended up with it a few years after this post in the rarest of the rare thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3466287&highlight=seat#3466287

Yeah I'm sure that'll be safe in an accident.

VW would have come out with that if they worked.

I don't have kids, but if I did I wouldn't put them in that seat extension.

How would that be not safe? The seatbelts are the safety items and are not fixed to the seat but the floor...

If you're worried that the seat will move in case of an accident, just fix it with something stronger than the metal collar or even weld it to the seat leg...

And Why would VW ever want to come out with that since they didn't sell the z-bed kit...

You don't think one person ever asked VW to develop a way for someone to move the middle seat forward to create more room for people sitting in the backseat?
