Edit: I eventually used a resized jpg image for my avatar, thanks Dan!, as it was larger than the same pic thumbnail version from my gallery photo.

You need to look for the "Save As..." in your program and change the JPG compression rate. It's probably saving it with zero compression.
You want 15% compression or so.
In Photoshop, yes, it's "Save for the Web".
Or email it to me. |
Everett,
Thanks for the offer of help.
This is what worked for me.

You could also upload the picture, if it is VW related, to the gallery. Then use the thumbnail for an avatar. |
I thought I would expand on this, especially since now the Gallery has larger thumbnails, ones that are too large to use as avatars.
To grab an avatar-size image from a Gallery entry, click on the Gallery photo so that all you see in your browser is the photo.
The web address in your browser will be something like this:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/794468.jpg
The small thumbnail address, the one you could use for an avatar will be:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/thumbnails/794468.jpg
Example:
You have to add the thumbnails address in the address to access the smaller image.
You can use that address in your Control Panel to add the image to your profile. Enter the address in this box in your Control Panel:
Upload Avatar from a URL |
Thanks for all the help (including Dan who emailed and worked on resizing my pic).
Everett, You'll find I started a second topic in the Vanagon forum since I didn't know what had happened to this one. Please delete as appropriate.
Thanks! The SAMBA site is great.... _________________ Dave O

I'm still not clear why some members have larger avatars than others.
When I create my avatar based on the site requirements (100 X 100, 12 KB) it appears much smaller than many members' avatars.
Maybe I just have 'avatar envy' but I love the John Muir 'dream' image (my current avatar) and it would be great if it would appear just a little larger. _________________ "If you're going through hell, keep going."

The avatar you used above is NOT 100x100.
It's 62x85.
If you need help, email me the image you want to use.
I did notice that this image appears to be made from your latest Gallery entry so I resized it to 100 on one side and set it as your avatar in that size.
It's larger now. _________________ How to Post Photos
