I calibrated today using the ice water and boiling water test. I had to my offset at -6 and the multiplier at 1.019 to achieve calibration.
I calibrated in a room that was 25 degrees (76 Fahrenheit) and took it outside to where it was around 30 degrees. Judging my the difference it made for the cold water test, I doubt there is cold junction compensation. I find the strange that they wouldn't include this with all the other IC chips they threw in, including EEPROM!
I'm sure with the time and patience, it wouldn't be hard to rig a summing op amp attached to another thermocouple to perfect this meter.

Dang, did you mean to get a Celcius gauge?
Edit:
Just saw your q about switching to Farenheit.. I don't think you can. Maybe the seller can provide some documentation about that? _________________ Robert in Memphis

Yea that was an accident. I didn't see the little c at the end of the description. It's ok though, I use Celcius on a daily basis. I would think that one could just set the offset to +32 and the range multiplier to 1.8 but.. it only goes to 1.5.
None the less, I'll just have to look out for 204 instead of 400. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=582117 |

That is a lot of ice!
I have been very happy with mine! It is bright, I still need to get some green scotch tape to put over it so it matches my Innovate AFR gauge. I mounted mine under the dash where the steering wheel spoke is blocking my normal view under straight conditions, but an easy lean to glance down at it, It helps keep the glare down that way
I do have the wire for the ring coming out through the spark plug seal and running between the engine seal gap under the middle of the firewall and running over the transmission and forward under the left side of the bus. I do have a Thermocoupler disconnect about 2 feet down stream so I can drop the engine. Next time its out I'll run it completely underneath and out of sight too _________________ Rebuild your own FI Harness..My Harness

Too cold! Im ready to move back south.
Puting some sort of tented tape over it sounds like a great idea! It hasn't bothered me too much as its no brighter than the radio lights. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=582117 |

Mine is still running strong! Best investment in my bus. Makes me way more confident on long drives.

K so I finally installed mine this morning, and when I hooked it up, it started at 82 and went down as the engine warmed up. I swapped the thermocouple wires and it read -2, and it's like 65 out right now F. Thinking of some stupid Idea, I decided to swap the + and - 12v supply and blew out the lcd gauge.... gonna order a new one.
Ideas as to why it wasn't reading a typical temp?
Grounded thermocouple under 3rd plug
One piece 14 foot TC sender ran to the front to the gauge, and powered as the wiring diagram said to wire it. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Well, if you hooked up your thermo wire already, you might want to order a short one from Amazon to do your calibration. Pulling the one you wired seems like a SOB to do in comparison.
I ordered mine gauge off eBay a few weeks ago so should be here by end of July _________________ 1977 Champagne Transporter Custom Camper.

So can somebody compile exactly what you need and the links to them
this is for CHT but has someone use these kind of things for oil temperature

Small update. I have tested and calibrated the unit in my oven and it is damn close. Way better than I expected. I removed the ring for calibration and found it has much better response now. I plan to drill a small hole as close to plug #3 base as possible and JB weld the thermocouple to the head. I know that is controversial but its good enough for me. There are 4 calibration setting on the unit:
Zero correction
Full scale calibration
Noise Filter correction
Cold junction correction
I only had to adjust the full scale calibration. It was reading spot on at 32 but high at 200. Now its very close in the whole range (at room temp).
I should have it in the bus this week. Fingers crossed it works out. We are driving the bus to Legoland in a month and don't want to burn up on the grapevine!

Dr. Rocket,
1. You stated you removed the ring. Are you referring to the ring some use to put on the cylinder head/spark plug or another ring?
2. Is there calibration instructions included with the digital gauge?
EDIT: missed this part. Not sure I totally understand what the hell its saying, but these are calibration instructions it seems.
