This is what is called "over restoration". Better than new.
You can't drive it when its done, becasue you might get it dirty. Trailer queen at best, or find some rich cat to buy it, and let it sit in his garage.
What's the point? |

The point is, if you have the ability, tools and resources, why not? The van will last a long time and he's having fun.
I say use it! _________________ Currently:

Boooooooo!
Share your opinion about what he's done with the van so far, not what you think he will do with it in the future. _________________ 85 Westfalia Weekender

In a way, that is kind of my approach. I group everything together for each system and have it staged, ready for install. Thanks again! |

I will take the "Better than new" part as the compliment lol ... thanks!
I assure you I will be able to drive it and I plan on getting it dirty. This van will never (intentionally) see the back end of a trailer. If some rich cat wants to cut me a check, I have the title right here.
The point is that I like to challenge myself and to recap from an earlier post ...

As absurd as it might seem, I will have no qualms about taking it down the first dirt road I find. My main goal is the mechanicals of course, but the detail work serves a purpose as well. This van was new to me and I can say I now know it soup to nuts (intimately at that). If I find myself having to make repairs in the middle of nowhere, that alone is worth the price of admission. Not pulling out a handful of grease is just bonus I know exactly what is going on under there and being able to see what I am doing, just makes it that much easier. In the end, I am only out some time and my cost for materials. The other reason being, this will be my last foray into building up a vehicle and part of me wanted to go for it lol. It all makes sense in my head at least. |
I'll still wave when I pass you on the road/trail. |

I have been looking at this "build" and it's just that. A building of a van. No cutting corners due to production costs that VW would do. To me this is the differance of a build vs restroation.
Now this is funny to me.

Negativity is in the reader. I'm saving people a lot of wasted time, money, and effort.
I've been there and done that several times. |

Puhleeze, very few of us have the $$$, facilities or patience to complete this level of build intensity. You're projecting your own notions onto someone else's project. This isn't anything I would ever desire to do, but far be it from me to tell someone else how they should go about the process, or utilize the end product. _________________ Casey--

I think Signalocity should post a link to this thread on a few BMW sites. Customers will fill the drive where he_____?. Yeh man, what is your title at the place with the tile floor? Attention to detail is something you have. It can not be forced. I feel I have a fair amount, and there are those who bring it to a whole other level. This is an amazingly detailed and fairly quick build on a whole other level. While every thing is not done to my flavor. Don't get me wrong, thank god there is variety in the world! Everything is done, this is a righteous build. Should it be sold? That level of detail is unmatched by the businesses marketing rebuilt Syncros. What ever the motivation, I'm jealous. I have never gone to this length building anything. This is inspirational! Keep it coming. I want to see the yeh, after I finished it, I figured out what I wanted to mod! This is what I'm building now pages! Thanks for Sharing! |

Thanks, but I like to retain a little anonymity. I agree with your statement about variety. I can appreciate any build, from beaters and sleepers to full on trail rigs and beauty queens. I like them all! If you turn your own wrenches, there is nothing wrong with taking a little pride in your work. It is a great sense of accomplishment. If you have the bankroll to pay to have it done for you, nothing wrong with that either lol. I am happy to share and I appreciate it. |

Just read this from start to finish.
I wish I was so disciplined to carry out a restoration like this.
Great photos.
Love the subtle background images of new bmw's.
Your wheels' colour choice remind me of the wheel on
the e39 m5 (shadow chrome)
The van and this thread will be a great thing to have achieved.
Keep it up. |

Well, I can see several advantages. The idea of removing, inspecting, reconditioning, & reinstalling means everything is checked & fixed then - not somewhere in the woods / desert / autozone parking lot at midnight. Clean up would be much easier, along with any reinspection after off-roading. There is also the learning of systems that can only be gained when you actually remove & reinstall any given part.
A+ in my book |
