that's actually closer than you think. the fox was the US version of the brazilian gol, which design was inspired by the polo (bertone) and the golf (giugiaro). _________________ cars:

I'm thinking of putting 2002 bug taillights on my split. What do you guys think? I think it will modernize the look. _________________ CH³NO²

clearly I'm not stopping with only the tail lights and never did I claim that only putting the tail lights itself would make it look and have a vintage feel. this is just one part of my project of a very large picture here.
and besides, you can't compare changing parts on a split to make it look more modern to what I'm planning. splits are a fortune, rare, and not very practical for me to use in Japan as a daily driver. people customize and mod their bugs all the time. someone who wanted a more modern looking bug would just therefore buy a later model bug with ease since they are not any shortages on them, nor do they cost an arm and a leg to pick up.
i know that i will never win any shows for what I want to do to my car, and that is not what I even care about. (not that my car would win anything in its current state anyways.) yes, it might look silly and tacky to split owners and vw enthusiasts, but hey so do a lot of other private mods that owners do to their cars. its personal and what I like, so I've already decided to go for it once I source most of the parts I need. again, will probably take quite a while until I get enough money for all of this. in fact, my car will probably actually become a classic Beetle by the time I can go through with all of this.

. There are tons of people in Japan that do this to there later Beetles, give them a “vintage look” with earlier fenders, etc. |
If this is true I'm sure you will find plenty of help in the appropriate forum, and I suggest this thread be locked or moved there.
Good luck with your undertaking and I hope that your project is what you envision and brings you joy. |

Why all the hate? I bought mine when I was 16 years old and stored it for 29 years before I could afford the time and money to do it right. I was collecting parts and deciding what I was going to do with it all along the way. Good luck to you and your beautiful bug, though.

gotta get to work soon. wish i could write more back.
really, my deepest apologies split dog. i was way out of line. I admit I'm a bit of a hot head at times and those couple of comments got under my skin. my bad. thanks for editing that one comment. I'll do the same and remove mine as well. believe it or not I'm not a troll. I'm actually a very non confrontational type of person, ad hard as that might seem to believe. love the forum and most members on here.
guess I need to come to terms and accept that what I'm doing will take a lot of crap in the VW world.
by the way slit dog, I'm not trying to butter you up and be all buddy, buddy now, but love your car! I always show my son the vw 2011 show to keep him occupied. he loves cars. your car is actually in the clip, pretty sweet. |

Right on. The forum (here) that you chose was not right for your application. These guys are pretty hard-core about stock splits. Heck, most of them don't even like my car the way it is. But really, the best advice for you is to keep your car the way it is, and find an early 60's car. You will love it. _________________ CH³NO²

Split taillights are not the ones you want on a daily.
Go for the 68-72 tombstone lights. They will look perfect. _________________ www.volksfahrer.nl

I saw this picture in another thread (he's looking for a car cover), but if you can get past the whale tale , he's installed a split window in a '70s Super Beetle along with the early vents.

thanks hopkin! very interesting find! this one made me actually laugh out loud.
the split window doesn't look all that bad, but looks kind of strange with the later rear fenders and tail lights.
But, what in god's name is all of that going on with the deck lid and rear bumper. although maybe others would find what I'm just as appauling and jaw dropping as this extreme modification.
in my defense, at least I'm sticking to stock / original parts for my build. |
