Yep good times
The last few days I've been trying to sqare away some handling issues. I went through the rear suspension replacing brake hoses, wheel cylinders and pivot bushings and finding 28mm Sway away torsion bars. I managed to do a four wheel alignment as per this thread
DIY Alignment
Of course I couldn't do it without having a huge thunderstorm looming over head.
Managed to get it pretty straight now. I can push the car back and forth with a single finger as opposed to before when I had to lean into it. After rebleeding all the brakes and taking it down the road it's much improved but still has a bit of pull to the left. Now that I know how to do it it wouldn't be hard to set up quick and re-adjust.
Now I'm just waiting for some new lugnuts for my centerlines. The cheap Dorman knock-offs I've been buying at the store have been breaking in two. Cheap chinese junk! _________________ Brian H.

After struggling to figure out how the stock horn is supposed to work I think I finally have success. The '70 model uses a steering shaft bearing that is isolates the upper shaft from grounding on the column and has a wired tab that goes to the horn. There were a lot of places grounding the system that I had to modify including trimming the cover that rides behind the steering wheel. It was making contact with the column behind it.
The odd thing is the steering lock makes direct contact with the isolated shaft making the horn sound when you pull the key out. This means the horn has to be wired to accessory side of switch instead of battery making the horn dead when the car is off. Not a big deal since I have another switch to a separate horn under the dash if I need it.
My law trip to harbor freight they had a dual horn kit for $7 I couldn't resist. It's prolly not going to hold together forever but most horn don't these days. It's a lot louder than the the other horn I had connected to the switch under the dash.
Amazing what a PITA reinstalling the stock horn system was and I'm glad to be done with it. I also had issues with the clearances between the turn signal contacts/wires and the column and kept blowing fuses. $10 in fuses later I decided to sandwich some thin cardboard from an oil filter box in between and that seems to be good now. Not sure why that became a problem suddenly.
I think the steering column has been reassembled at least a couple dozen times in the last few days. Time to move onto to something else! _________________ Brian H.

That's it. I've had it with these f#$%s who wanna do 80 through construction zones on the highway and try to run me in my slow-@ss baja off the road when there are workers less than ten feet off the side of the lane and we're supposed to be doing 45. Operation: smoke screen is underway!
More to come later... _________________ Brian H.

I haven't had an older car like this in quite awhile.
This morning I had a nostalgic feeling as I'm driving into work. There was a thunderstorm ahead and it was just getting light out. My radio quit working and all I could hear is the drone of the engine plugging away behind me as I drove into the light rain. It was a feeling of being connected to the road again and also being free from that feeling like I need to keep up with everyone.
I'm a pretty aggressive personality, but I'm mellow in my baja.
As long as it's running. |

^thanks
Finally got a weekend planned to take Mary out for some recreation in the woods. Kinda nervous because I don't want to break her but I'm sure she'll do fine.
Last night I finished up a couple projects I had going.
First I added a washer fluid bottle with an electric pump and a vinyl cover for the back of the dash. The cover didn't really turn out as trick as I'd hoped it would. Fastening it to the car proved to be more challenging than I was motivated, if that makes any sense. I went from using snaps to sewing in magnets to using zipstrips and some magnets to hold the lower portion down. It's just gotta deflect any water or heavy dirt that may come up under the nose from ruining items in the dash. I think it'll be fine.
Took out my Kadron filters and gave them a good soak in some oil eater and water. They got absolutely filthy from that oil leak I had. Especially the Outerwears. _________________ Brian H.

On a side note.
My wife recently decided she had to have a Jeep and we started hunting and found and purchased a nice '03. After having it on the road about two weeks I come home yesterday and she tells me she doesn't want her Jeep anymore - that she should have bought a VW. lol
Evidently she had a death wobble experience over the weekend and ever since she's been skiddish. As a matter of fact she has been skiddish ever since she started driving it saying something was wrong or making noise in the front end. I keep telling her that's the nature of a Jeep but people drive them safely evey day. She says she's worried about taking her grand kids out in it now.
What can I say? Oh yeah. I told you so.

we bought it with a 3" lift, dual steering dampers, 29" or 30" tires. just under $9K. I pulled the front track bar bushing down and it looks like it got egged out by this rediculously skinny bolt that holds it. Picked up a proper bolt and a bushing today and removed the steering dampers. Hopefully the death wobble will disappear. _________________ Brian H.

just an update on my trials and tribulations with Mary.
She hasn't been doing so well. Seems like something goes wrong every other month now. I had installed a Scat bolt in sand seal pulley and a Bugpack breather box that seemed to be working great.
Well after the last trip to White Cloud the breather box started dripping oil everywhere so I disassembled it and cleaned the element out thinking the foam had got clogged with oil and it had. Its a little better now but still kinda messy.
Last week the pulley started leaking. And I'm not talking a drip like before where it just gets on the pulley and flings all over. This is a river of oil that runs down over the oil pump housing and then off the case into a puddle.
I've been only driving it to work lately and I keep an eye on the level but this is getting a little old. I haven't had time to pop off the pulley to check out the seal yet. I'm wondering what went wrong. I'm also remembering why I decided to go to that GM motor on my woods buggy. The VW I had in that had the same temperment.
The engine just doesn't seem as healthy anymore and I kinda wonder wether it was ever really 100% this summer. It takes a long time to warn up and idle without my foot on the gas and shifting is a chore. I managed to just about rid myself of the dieseling at shutdown by going with premium gas the last two months. I get around 19 to 20 mpg which I don't think is too bad considering my driving habits and the state of tune. I think I may have a higher compression engine than stock because of this favor for premium. I need to have the heads redone soon and valves replaced.
With this pulley seal goin I also wonder if maybe the case isn't ready for a line bore and new bearings? Perhaps the crank has a little shake that is messing up the seal? It's either that or I still have WAY too much positive pressure in my crankcase even with a breather and two vents. (head job?)
Anyway, it's getting to be that time of year where I really don't care to be working out in the driveway anymore. It's chilly and the sun is only up for a couple hours after I get home and get started. I hate friggin working in the dark!
Lazy Mary needs to shape her little butt up or she's rollin towards getting parked for awhile.
Oh did I mention I got holes opening up in the floor? lol Guess I need to get on with Project Someday so I can get time to build a rotisserie and put some cement in the pole barn and restore ole Mary next. I'm almost tempted not to renew the plates on her(due this month) because I'm not sure if she'll even get driven next year. boo lip _________________ Brian H.

Please read brother. Remember, It's a bug motor and some of the shit that we all slap on it needs to be massaged in, if you will. Check this
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=489804
I was once going to put a sand seal on one of my street bugs but thought better of it.
Dude, a man with your skill set should not give up this easily. It's a bug motor for shit sake, fix it. Then weld a damm cage in there and screw the floor holes. Tie that bith in, my brother. _________________ Herc |
