We haven't been above freezing for over a month and next to the big lake here you can add in high winds and lake effect.
Right now all I can do is power wash parts but I'm not standing in a car wash spraying parts that will freeze before I get them back in the car. It's a pain. _________________ Brian H.

Uncle died last Thursday and have been sitting in Philly airport for two days after a failed attempt to make it to his funeral that was today. So I put up some pics of progress on my beam. Got it washed down and have one adjuster welded in.
Here is pic of the parts involved the adjuster.
I was wrong about the two threads being different. It took a couple tries to find how the parts actually assemble in order to put the arm where you want. The short set screw goes threads into the hole above the dimple in the leaf pack and the medium screw runs through the other hole which lands on the flat of the narrow leaf. This is the screw that the longer screw works on to rotate the leaf pack.
Hopefully, someday I'll be able to leave this godforsaken airport and get back to it. _________________ Brian H.

WOW yours came with instructions!!!
Well that is exactly how I assembled mine so glad to see I did it correctly even though I did it blind. Really kinda simple once you put it together and see there is only one way to do it right, which is what I did, put it together before I welded anything.
Good luck at the airport and sorry to hear about your loss and worse you had to miss the funeral. |

Still in philly
Yeah the instructions could be better. It was a good thing i took my time and only tacked the parts together because i had to reposition it several times. Usually i get hasty and make a mess for myself to repair. _________________ Brian H.

I forgot to mention when i put the battery in Mary to move her out of storage and hit the starter the motor turned for what seemed like a quarter turn and came to a abrupt stop. Every turn of the key after that resulted in zero starter movement, dash lights dimming to out and visible arcing at the push button starter switch. battery has been on a charger. after a quick trouble shooting session i would assume i either have a short to ground or a siezed engine!
I actually cant wait to get home to put a breaker bar on the crank and check.
Wish me luck _________________ Brian H.

You could have a sticky float in your carbs and have hydro locked the engine. I doubt it seized up just sitting unless you had some serious moisture in the cylinders that rusted one up solid. |

thanks for the well wishes, my uncle was a genuinely good man and led an amazing life. He was a world renowned chemist specializing in polymers and had an incredible amount of patents including many thing you use on a daily basis like glow sticks, the coatings inside beer cans, and even pioneering revolutionary 3D printing processes. With all that he never accepted any special treatment and was a humble spirit. All of my motivation for learning and expanding my abilities despite my lack of resources I credit to his influence in my life.

Finally home and recovered from my crazy fiasco in Philly, I decided to run out quick and check out why the starter wasn't working. I checked the fuses and after a quick look over of the wire harness I hooked the battery back up and hit the start button. It turned over. So all I can conclude is that despite having kept the battery in a warm room on a trickle and putting a halogen light under the oil pan over night, the single digit temps we had that day were just too much for that starter to over come. Now that it had been parked in a warmer garage for a bit it wants to turn over. _________________ Brian H.

145 patents! Wow! Seems like he lived a very full life. Glad you made it back home finally! Good deal on the starter working. When I fired mine the other day even with the heat on in the garage it was turning kinda hard with the cold weather. |

Started tearing down my steering box down tonight.
After a power wash in the driveway, I noticed something missing which might explain how greasy the outside was.
There wasn't gear oil inside but a bunch of grease which didn't seem to be around the moving parts much.
To my surprise it had conventional seals installed in it
and after I pulled all the guts I noticed it was a recent TRW box
Not sure if this is a good thing, but it looks beautiful inside despite being kinda dry. The seals seemed too stiff like they had hardened. I wonder if I can figure out how old it actually is? I put paint around the stampings to see them clearer. It has an aluminum lid.
After a thorough degreasing and a careful sandblast of the outside I can powder coat the pieces and in the meantime, hopefully I'll have some new seals ordered and on their way to get here about the time I finish all that. _________________ Brian H.

Awesome front beam. I have been toying with adjusters, but more afraid of what I might find when I clean the beam up. _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

Thanks. It's all coated and shiny black now. It always amazes me how good the quality of the metal was they used on the old cars; even this Brazil beam. I'm really anxious to get it back together but I know this isn't the time to rush things. As we speak I'm powder coating my spindles and then my arms. Hoping that if I remove the rubber boot and spray as much grease out of the BJ's I can put them in the oven and not get a mess.
I'm also going to attempt to add some grease zerts to the BJ's. _________________ Brian H.
