So the truck was converted to 12 volt at some point in its life. My question is do I need to change the switches on the dash so that they don't blow up.

Haven't done much to the truck put a tire on it and rolled it across the driveway so that I could pressure wash my 69 sunroof bug that I am doing a body off restoration on. Thinking about picking up body soldering.

What do you think that white fiberglass bed is worth I pressure washed it still need to take some pictures and sell it to free up some cash to work on the truck which will have the body removed so I can replace the floors eventually.

No, they'll be just fine with 12V. I'm guessing everything else has already been changed to 12V -- wiper motor, headlight high/low beam relay, bulbs, etc?

You don't have to remove the body to cut out and weld in new/used pans unless you're building a Show pickup.

I got the headlights working and they are 12 volt so i think that everything was switched ill check things as I go through the car and get the wiring sorted it was a pain to re-key the aftermarket ignition and then get the wiring hooked up to it right. Right now only the lights and starter work the dash lights and wipers are going to be next As far as wiring.

The engine will fire if I put gas down the carbs but I don't think the fuel pump works ill get another one to swap on to it later. still have not been able to get the fuel line un clogged.

The bed is toast and I think it will be easier to patch if I remove the body I guess we will see what happens when I get to it I would be happier if I didn't have to do that.

Last night I removed the turbo from my baja bug so I could drive it daily again I then blew two quarts of oil all over the front of my house when I started it and found a stripped stud on the sump causing a leak. I got it fixed for now but I need to install a larger stud when I change the oil next.

Still don't know what I should list that fiberglass bed for.

Project is not dead just sleeping. I should be picking up a corvair truck rear window in the next few days to replace the plexiglass one that I have. I think I'm going to replace the pans with some flat sheet metal because I can't find a type 3 with descent pans anywhere near me.

I am rebuilding a couple bug engines for a friend of mine and he is going to come over and do some welding on the truck should have pictures soon.

My passenger side door is still stuck closed any ideas how to get it open without breaking it?

It is probably locked. Remove the door panel, or roll window down & blast the lock assy. with oil, work the lock & handle it should come free. Are you getting the Corvair sheet metal to go with the window?

Ok I pushed it in the garage and the door soaking in kroil I think the mechanism is seized.

I pulled the tires off and crawled underneath today my muffler and heater boxes are toast. I also checked my brakes and the fronts are fine and the rears were metal on metal. The transmission is leaking in every place it could possibly leak and is coated in some nasty gunk however the engine is looking very clean and I suspect it was well cared for before it sat.

I was thinking about swapping the whole transmission and rear brakes from my 67 parts beetle into the truck. I believe the brakes are different but I already installed a bug dual circuit master cylinder so I think it will be fine.

UPDATE:

I've acquired this truck from Ben and will be restoring it with my wife and 10yo son! Very Happy

I was searching CL for starter cars for my teenage daughters when I stumbled upon the ad. I became instantly obsessed. I didn't even know these things existed! While researching the truck I came to the thread here by dc and my obsession grew out of control. I contacted Ben yesterday (8/22/14), drove the ~3 hours to his place, and bought the truck. The minute I stopped in his driveway the sky opened up and dumped rain and lightning on and all around us, but our enthusiasm was undeterred. We talked awhile with Ben about his other projects (he's a very knowledgable young man), got soaked loading the truck on the tow dolly, and headed down the road towards a fun new adventure.

On the drive home my son and I were abuzz with excitement which prompted us to personalize the truck by naming him "Frank". Upon our arrival my wife, who had been less than enthusiastic, fed on our energy and immediately began thinking of great finish ideas. I mentioned we needed to work from start to finish and not the other way around Wink but it's fun to see her as excited as we are. She calls him Frankie.

Also, before heading up to get Frankie I found a "67 SB that is several owners away from a title. All the floors are good and it has most all the parts I'll need for Frank. I plan on getting it tomorrow. It's just so damn serendipitous! Here's a few pics of Frankie's "bride":

I haven't been this excited about anything in a long, long time. I look forward to sharing the experience here, especially considering I'm gonna NEED the knowledge of all yous guys.

Thanks,
Max

Nice scores! But I doubt that's a 67, since it's fuel injected and that started in 1968. Check your VIN.

You will no doubt have lots of questions, so it's best if you start your own thread, since it'll be easier to keep all the questions and answers in one place.

There might be some minor differences, but I'm sure someone will chime in with more details.

Frank's Bride wasn't in as good of shape as I had hoped, but I'll be able to make alot of it work. It was also a huge pain in the ass gettin her loaded to pull her home. All part of the experience I s'pose.

Any other suggestions on getting the door unstuck?

I've been working on removing the body.....and it's not going super great. Busted a couple bolts (the front corner body bolts broke off internally Mad ) and bent my linkage when I tried to see what level of separation I had. Many nuts and bolts are just to rusted to remove without breaking. One of the bolts that broke was the passenger shock mount bolt. I think I can work around that one though.

I'm trying to remove the engine, tranny, and rear wheels all together. I thought it would be easier, but now IDK. Any tips?

Also, the SB is a much more solid car than I had at first thought. The doors have smooth action, and after a quick pressure washing it all seems fairly clean. I might just have to chase down a title and put it on the road!

Sounds ridiculous to me to try and remove engine, trans, rear wheels/subframe as one unit. You won't even be able to move it? The engine Alone is Plenty heavy for 2 strong guys. Engine then transmission or engine & transmission is what we ALL do. Wink Your broken pan bolts can be drilled & removed with an Easy-Out kit.

I kinda have to agree with Mike on this. I'd pull the engine first, then the rear subframe with the trans (since you have a swing axle). If you do that, it'll be more manageable to handle. I use the larger Harbour Freight moving carts (on sale for 11.99), as the width is just right for a type 3 engine. Wink I use 2 small sections of 2 by 4, to raise it up enough to get my heavy duty floor jack under. Very Happy

its not ridiculous if you have a hoist and speed up the work some especially being SA with frame horns, by hand, yes its harder but doable. You just start raising the rear and when the drivetrain and sub frame are self supporting you undo the frame, keep raising the car while supporting the engine at the back with trolley jack. Once the car clears the wheels, pull the jack and wheel the whole unit out from under the car.

Engine heavy for 2 guys? Shocked lol I install all my type 3 engines together with gearbox by hand when I was a teen when I had no equipment, engine seems pretty light to me, its only 130kg awkward though.

I use a trolley jack now though, it saves your back.

Removing all at once is insane. You're putting way too much stress on parts.

Engine, then trans, then sub frame.
