Day 2, 508 miles.

I found this FB page with what I believe is another car in their class. Lots of details on how each stage is run:

Day 3, 550 miles.

There are three cars entered in the Vintage class:

61 Triumph TR4

83 Audi

and the Thing. Cool

Here is a quote from the TR4 team on day 2's course:

Quote:
Today was dominated by two long, tough gravel/pot hole roads. We have been down rougher roads, but nothing so long. The first was 100 miles long, the second only 63! Both started open, wide, smooth and FAST for the timed to-the-second sections, and both became very rough, narrow and, in the case of Blackwater Road, liberally populated by unpredictable cattle. One of which I missed by inches. Compared to a TR4, they are BIG!!!!

Just freakin cool!! Shocked
What a blast this would be...... Although, I'd have to have closed comm headsets to be able to Hear the Nav, and NOT hear all the squeaks and rattles from the 'ol Bucket!

Good on ya guys, for making the effort and progressing!!

I agree Joe, this is a must do on the bucket list! The winter version I'll pass on, but the summer run every four years looks awesome! Cool

Day 4 today is 560 miles in the Yukon ending in Whitehorse.

Lots of great info from the TR4 team again on FB regarding day 3, but no mention of the Thing. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Jan-Tims-Excellent-Adventure/227215100810020?fref=nf

Hopefully we can get some first hand reports soon. Wink

First, big thanks to Shoyrtt for keeping everyone informed!
I've been having computer problems and reports from my dad have been slow. But here is what I've got from him so far.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

"3 days in and all goes well. 1400 rally miles down. Yesterday had over 100 miles off pavement, luckily it rained all night so no dust and corners were drifting heaven, even in a thing. Cow would not let us pass, had to go off into the ditch to get around."

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

"Bear glacier near Hyder AK. We did see numerous bears in this area. Today brought more rain and then rainbows. Resolved the rain shower in the car with gaffer tape.
The car is running great with zero issues so far. Some of the others have had problems with rock damage on the off pavement sections. Oh, we do need a new windshield now from rocks thrown up by opposing traffic on the gravel, to be expected."

I actually thought the fee wasn't too bad considering it includes lodging for two for 9 nights and "banquets". From their site:
Quote:
Entry Fee, autos ($2900): Fee for one auto and 2 drivers, including accommodations (double occupancy) and banquets.

The SCORE Baja 1000 is $4070 to $3470 depending on which class you are in this year (yes Class 11 the stock VW bug pays $3470). For that fee, you get to sleep in the dirt if you break or get no sleep at all if you are lucky. Laughing Just tell your wife you are going on a 10 day Alaskan cruise for $2900...now thats a bargain!

Oh, yeah.... Can't let the smoke out of a British car, or they don't run right... That Lucas guy was a smoke containment genius!
Maybe they can get one of these overnighted? Or airdropped by bush plane....Wink

Yeah sound like the triumph had a bad day according to their Facebook page.
Here is day 4 from my dad and the thing.

"Came upon this most interesting crossroad forest of signs from all over the world. Gloria and I were here 28 years ago and there were only a couple hundred or so, now they number in the thousands. Found one from Medford, 1,902 miles south, we are now another 300 more in Whitehorse. Did a little Christmas shopping at the farmers market . Alpaca rancher with handmade items of alpaca, of course, can't say for who or what.
Tomorrow we go all the way to Dawson. Finished with 500+ mile days, now only 400s. Rain again today a little, but mostly dramatic clouds mixed with sun and rainbows, and hundred mile views.
Car has settled in and just purring along. We think we aced the rally section this morning, two sections tomorrow. Have not done well in the early going but are now figuring it out."

Day 5, 400 miles. Last full day in the Yukon, Whitehorse to Dawson City. Cool

I wonder how the Audi is doing? It would be great for the Thing to win the Vintage class. Very Happy

" The "thing" rolls on, 3,000 miles and counting... No issues at all. Timed section today was more gravel and mud, but just a hoot sliding thru corners. It is a bit hard on the car and we keep checking for parts vibrating loose. Two cars have blown head gaskets and are out as of now. Maybe too much 100mph fun, we just cruise along at 60.
Now in Dawson, Yukon Territory."

Shot out the windshield at 60mph, and why we need a new one. Gravel shotgun!

Fall is in the air and in the trees! The last minutes of sun before 45 miles of rain. Really glad for working wipers. Wishing for a heater.

"All but two days of the trip have seen some rain. Yesterday saw the most in the afternoon on the 400 mile run down to Valdez. We took on a lot of water and have been using newspaper under the rubber mats to soak it up. Rain X is my friend! Valdez gars more snow than anywhere else in North America, so I was told. There are glaciers everywhere and it was cold. We are dressed for snow in the thing.

A day earlier in Fairbanks when the sun was out, good day to go over the car and look for problems. Exhaust hanger bracket clamp broken, repaired with bailing wire. Left front brake hose rubbing on body, zip tied to speedo cable.
All else looked fine so we cruised on down to Chena hot springs to soak."
