Got all excited and found a black case behind the seat today when pulling it all out. I was hoping it would be full of money but it was full of cassette tapes.
Then my wife was playing around with the aircraft stripper and the roof metal looks nice underneath but damn there's a lot of paint on there.

So I couldn't do much today so I started stripping the lower front fender in front of the door. Lots of bondo, but it looks like someone tried to do a bad weldjob.
Still not sure what the original color was, LOL. I thought at first the blue was a guide coat for the bodywork but it's metallic.
Primed it just to stop flash rust since it's still outside.
I guess the PO didn't like the original antenna location so he decided to do another crappy weld job.

This was under the carpet, I guess he needed to cut the tunnel and didn't want to do another crappy weld job.
SO, I was trying to figure out how to get the seats out and it looks like they were attached to another floorpan then welded over the existing pan. The rear looks like there are 3 layers of metal. I'm thinking a halfpan was welded over another one.

Man that ghia had some mean people in its past. Once you get your patch panels and welding equipment go slow. Keep a rag in a bucket with water handy to cool the metal as you weld. Warping is a big problem.

Will do, thanks. What's sad is, that's a pretty common repair...to weld in a new pan over the old one.
Found this in the glove box, this is apparently who did an earlier resto, if you can call it that.

So I never noticed this but after cleaning this tag I've found that the body doesn't match the chassis. The chassis #148995359 is and the body number is 148566668 but at least it's all '68. Kinda sucks but it's still all there and will make a great driver.

Yep, your car's body makes mine look good. Every time I get despondent about the amount of work I have to do, I look at yours, take a deep breath, and get back to the job at hand. I wont abandon this one. I mean think about it. In 1969 they made 27,000 Karman Ghias and I have one of them, vert owners are even more lucky. 27k may sound like a lot but it's not seeing what car makers pump out now. _________________ -Jared

I probably should have. In the 9 years between the time I got my ghia and the time I started working in it I took a welding class then got a 2 year certificate in autobody at the community college, then spent 4 years working in a collision shop. Almost, but not quite long enough to hate cars. |

Finally got the seats out, what a pain. Removed the nasty smelling upholstery from one. Found a couple spots on the seat frame that need to be welded. Still they used '69 seats but I'll take them back to '68 headrests.
Still not sure why they did the seat rails like this, but then again they welded a pan over the old one so.....
Went ahead and cleaned up the taillights with the homemade soda blaster and shot some Rustoleum Chrome paint on the right one for comparison.

Have you thought up a name for your Ghia? Could call it Boccaruni- sounds Italian; pronounced botch-a-rooni. I've never seen seat rails botched in so poorly! And you're still in the "discovery" phase from the poor car's POs...
I certainly hope you stick with the rebuild and bringing honor back to the car! |

Hahaha, no kidding. It's sad to think the person that did work on the car in the past actually thought it was a good job. I think a 10yr old with a MIG welder could have done it better. Every project has that point where you say "OMG what the hell did I get myself into" and this is definitely it but thinking about how much better the car will be when it's done right and I can say I did it makes it worth it. _________________ -Jared

Removed the 29PICT-1 carb, good thing it's going to be replaced with a Weber.
Not quite sure what the screw is shoved in the hole for...LOL

It's not a big deal to go back to '68 high back seats. All you need is the rail at the top providing the contour for the integrated headrest. Those rails slot into the seat rails at the sides near the top. If you need a photo, let me know. Been there and done that. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Off hand, I'd guess he used a screw because he couldn't get a nail to stay in as well.

So the engine is looking to be somewhat original after all, possibly a 1200 due to the 28PICT-1 carb. The AK looks to be just a replacement case.
No doghouse, definitely will be upgraded to one with a MAMO kit.
Old style generator, thinking about converting to an alternator...still debating
Definitely old style oil cooler bolted on top of the block
