Ha, yeah. I've been cleaining/painting engine tins, just haven't thrown up any pics. I was in MN for a couple weeks for work and got back last week. It's been so hot and humid outside I've been kind of motivated to get the garage cleaned out so I can push the car in and work in the A/C.
Next couple of weeks will be slow going, I have take my son to VaBeach this weekend and pick him up next weekend. Then we have a vacation at a family cabin in Gatlinsburg TN.
Still fighting with the damn DMV for the title (bastards) but that's another story. _________________ -Jared

Got the title...finally. Working on removing the steering wheel ring. The damn PO used an aftermarket wheel and adapter and welded it on to the shaft! I'll post pics later.
Got the speedometer refurbished. The new trim ring from KGPR went right on. I ended up using the end of a BIC pen to crimp the trim ring around the edge without any scratches. Looks good, hope it works well.
Old
Restored

Floorpans came in Saturday, set them aside for now.
Damn steering ring still won't come off. Don't know where that plastic ring came from, can't find it on any Ghia steering diagrams. I cut it off, figured it was with the aftermarket wheel.
Tons of heat and it still wont come off. Taking it to work tomorrow to try it on a press.
Who in the hell glues pennies under a fuel tank to seal holes? OMG! I was going to restore this tank, now I'm just buying a new one.

These things are sent to test us, Jared. You can use up a year's allocation of bad words in just one afternoon trying to undo the PO's work.
I like your work on the speedo and will do mine next week. I like the Bic pen idea. I've been wondering how to crimp the new chrome rings on without damaging the,. Thanks for the tip.
Someone said that I was restoring my car from the inside while he was working from the outside inwards. Seeing your new floorpans, I think you are working from the top down towards the bottom.

I'm actually working on some pieces as I remove them until I get to the point where I can lift off the body. Then I'll just work on the chassis. I figured that if I check each piece as I remove it to determine if it can be replaced or restored it will make assembly later go faster. _________________ -Jared

Got the steering column parts painted, I think they turned out great. Painted them gloss black. I have to get the new bearing, turn signal switch and ignition installed and then I can put that aside for later.
New front and rear apron arrived, can't wait to start cutting.

Yeah, he actually welded the cancelling ring to a VW hub of some sort then attached the steering wheel adapter to the ring. Jackleg stuff I tell ya!
I'm trying to find a Nardi or comparable repro (Flat4 or ISP maybe?) wooden wheel that will go in for a decent price so it will have a proper VW hub and adapter. _________________ -Jared

I can't wait to see how this goes. I have not seen someone even look twice at a ghia with problems like this. Good luck, and I will stay tuned. |

I'm sure it's been said but bag and tag everything. Especially in the doors. Some special countersunk screws that will be tough to find should you loose them. I got lucky. I thought I would be going back together pretty quick then life happened and 5 years later I'm digging through small buckets and boxes looking for everything. Luckily I have another ghia to look at and figure out where things went, and steal from. I have spent hours organizing things as I find them. Save your self the trouble.
Have you found a local VW guy yet? They are worth their weight in vw knowledge.
Good pace keep,it up! _________________ 63 ghia coupe |

Why don't you get R2 to help you? He looks like he could do with a job stuck all alone in the corner of the garage _________________ 1969 UK Karmann Ghia build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=518789&highlight= |

Some Ghias come in for a spit and polish. Some come in for a restoration. And then some, like yours and mine, come in for a resurrection.
Keep going. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

R2 would love to help but he's got to get to work on those moisture vaporators
Seriously, where did you get that and what does it do? Let me guess, you use it to serve drinks at your house parties! |

We actually found him on the curb. Someone was throwing him away He is actually an ice cooler. You fill him with ice and he actually has a drain as well. He was in perfect shape.

How about mounting him on the rear like R2D2 was mounted in the X-wing fighter?
