I have been looking tire and wheel sizes for my mendeola frontsuspension equipped project. What is too much? Lets say that you have atleast mendeola or strut front suspension and IRS with good coilovers etc.
I'v seen on some beetles 215-235/40 tires at front and 245-275/35 at back, and i have considered 215/40R18 at front and 255/35R18 at back. Allthough 225/40R18 is much more common than 215/40.
How is to drive with 17 or 18" wheels?
I have been looking hollowspoke 993 turbo 18" wheels and speedline lookalike kerscher KRS wheels, which are not the heaviest wheels. And i would prefer 7,5 front and 9" rear.
This 1303 has 225/40R18 and 265/35R18 tires, rear wheels allthough look at least 10" wide..Looks pretty wide..

That 1303 is probably parked 20 meters from it's heated garage, since it would be a POS in the rain or snow! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

If you're looking for that classic Cal look and are prepared to compromise the car's handling (and safety) then it will work. These days there are more front choices though- shorter 155's, 165's and even 175's that will still look good and be much more fun to drive. The tall rear tires (over 27" vs 25 1/2" stock) will fill up the wheel well nicely, but unless your big engine is ready they won't be the best for acceleration. _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |

Alex, what is your goal here? Is it to have the best handling setup, or maybe looks only?
I'm not a fan of unsprung weigh (tracked a Miata for a number of years), so huge 17 or 18 inch wheels would never be an option for me on any light car.
Handling wise, I'd stick with a very light 15 inch wheel and super sticky tires in something like 195 or 205 50s in the front and 225/45s in the rear.
Looks wise, the 17s do look nice on a Beetle, but unsprung weight would be high and the ride quality would suffer. |

195/55-15 front, 205/60-15 rear on 5.5x15 Porsche alloys.

It really depends on what you want. If you are planning on driving in the snow wider is not better.
I am running 17x7 wheels all around with 205/40/17 front and 225/50/17 rear. I love the look. The fronts with the small sidewall, along with the 3 inch narrowed beam and 3/4" sway bar make the front ride a little stiff, but I wanted it to handle in the corners, and it does.
I would think running 18" wheels in the front would leave such a thin sidewall that the ride would be objectionable. |
