New to the forum, it's awesome by the way, the pictures of vans from all over the world is the best. Anyway, not new to owning VWs, but it's been about 20 years. In high school I had a '75 that blew an engine and stupid me, I gave it to the repair shop for $200 because I couldn't afford the repairs. Later I had a '82 Westy, which I loved and had many good surf trips with to Westport Wa, but sold it after getting married. A close family friend had a '91 Westy bought new which I always admired since he was our neighbor growing up. For the past 20 years I've bugged him about selling it to me, and kept saying, "No, but someday when I'm done with it I'll sell it to you for a dollar. Well, I'm 43 now and he heard I was going to go out and buy a new car and he sold it to me for $1. It's flawless with 140K, and was garaged the entire 22 years it wasn't off on an adventure to Canada or
S. Dakota. I'm very lucky to be another VW Westfalia owner, and I won't be selling this one anytime soon.

That's funny, same thing my friend said, when I told him. He didn't believe me until I texted him a pic with my dog in the front seat. I'll post some pics soon. He replied, "I hate you" with a smile of course. He has a '69 Westy in his garage, but it needs a complete restoration. |

LOL - I think my old friend may be happy to see it go. He had kept meticulous records. He spent $29,000+ over the past 22 years. I know these aren't perfect, but wow! I figure I can put at least 15k into it before I care though.
I am very thankful and lucky!!! |

I'll help you out right now, your dog is on the bed.

I think you got ripped off. I don't think it's safe to drive, I spotted a pebble wedged in the tire tread. _________________ Tim Potts

That's a terrific story and you seem like the type of guy who will do the right thing with the van. And yes - change out your fuel lines. Read a bit on the fires in Vanagons due to the fuel lines being above the hot manifolds.
Welcome to the madness and joy.

Congratulations and enjoy!
Don't forget to send him postcards from your various adventures. If he's given it to you b/c he wasn't able to enjoy it anymore, it may bring him some great joy!
