Panels were dry. So out they came for a coating!
Then got onto fiddly bits. Door components, handles, strips, mirrors..
The clouds came over so roughly bolted them to the car to dry in the shed.
Starting to resemble a car now.

Couple of hours tinkering...
Window scrapers arrived, so in they went, need to redo the quarter seals so they will go in last.
Did a lot of this, its boring..
One guard
Two guard
Green guard, blue guard!!
Haha.
The lights look wonky cause they are there for a photo, waiting on seals still.

Guards are now wed to the car also!
Then did some tweaking and adjustment for the decklid.
Og spring and all!
Now to do the doors, and put in the door seals so they don't push the doors open by themselves.. _________________ shiny paint doesnt make it worth any more |

Thanks mate! A lot of it is just jump in the deep end an figure it out how to do it, dads played a big part years ago by throwing manuals at me an saying "u want to learn, read"
It's all fun too when I trouble shoot how to fix things.. Part of owning a vw!! _________________ shiny paint doesnt make it worth any more |

Got a plate made for the steering.
But needed the holes, thanks to Issac for the tapered reamer, top holes done.
Perfect!
Drilled and tapped the other side..
An presto!!
Now reinstall the steering again an re-align the tie rods. _________________ shiny paint doesnt make it worth any more |

Finally got around to installing...
One tie rod on,
An both!!!!
At full lock an no fouling on the shock!!! U can see the marks where it was hitting... The tyre hits the headlight bucket prior to the tie rod on shock cause of how low it is. Actually turns heaps more than before so I'm stoked now!
Major headache gone!!!

2 things. I'm impressed that you got that tail light housing back into the shape you did because I've tossed many of those in the scrap pile that weren't near as bad as that. Second, that threaded rod idea for that threaded mounting block is real nice but I gotta say, it gave me anxiety when I saw the pic of you pushing the block through the bolt hole. I know those bolts can be a pain in the ass to get started when the block is strapped, so I don't know you ever got them started in the past with that block floating around. I've always made a new block just like you did and cut an access so that I could weld in a new strap to hold it loosely in place. Even with that though, I think the threaded rod would make it much easier to get those bolts started. Is that Penetrol stuff just an oil or some type of clear that dries? If it's an oil, doesn't it rub/wear off? Well, keep it up and I'm sure you'll have it cruising the the streets real soon at the pace you're moving. Thanks for all the pics and info! |

Thanks mate, there was a near perfect set of housings that came with it that the po had but they wouldn't of looked right. And with a little thought and elbow grease a twisted one will ride again!! Looks heaps better than a good one too..
The block n rod was an idea I was wondering if it would work for ages, paid off in the end, every other time I've done a body to chassis I've struggled with that plate for ages, an cross threaded bolts too. This made it quick and painless. Was happy with the outcome of it that's for sure!
Penetrol is a oil type of stuff that dries into a flexible coating, it will need another application once a year on surfaces that see a lot of action (roof, guards, bonnet) but under where it's away from the elements as such won't as quick. I have penetrol on sections of my 57 oval an it's still there after 2years. Looks the part too without all the paint prep for a clear coat _________________ shiny paint doesnt make it worth any more |

Putting new seals an latches in the quarters so had to make a jig..
Clamps pulled it together quite easily, just need to see how they hold over night. Not hard to pull them out n re-clamp again..
Windows in, need graphite for the winding windows tho
Only need to put in the drivers quarter still, missing the top swivel thingy....
Macca gave ma hand pushin on this..
Kind of resembles a car now..

Thanks Sean. It does dull a bit, it's only fresh still. Good stuff too, it gets into all the cracks n crevices to seal it out. _________________ shiny paint doesnt make it worth any more |

Looks great D-train! I do have a question about the penetrol tho. You mention it dulls a bit as it ages, does it retain any shine? Reason I'm asking is I have a patina'd Studebaker that I'd love to seal up, but it's mostly just worn paint, not much rust. If I could make it look like it has some sort of clear on it, that would be fantastic. Does it work well on paint, like that? |
