Finally got my T4 case back from the machine shop from getting tank dipped to clean for $125.00. This is the second time I sent it there. The first time they guy give some BS story about aluminum being difficult to clean that it will take a bunch of elbow grease on my part to clean it. They threw it into the tank for the weekend, got it back today. Well it is within an small acceptable range of clean. Should I be finding a different machine shop. What does everyone use to tank the block. There must be an excellent aluminum cleaner available somewhere. |

Takes twice through the parts washer tank and a lot of elbow grease to clean some things. Do what the professional shops do. Hire a "new guy" for 8 an hour to scrub it clean.
There is no magic tank of stuff that cleans it for you, but we do make it seem like there is.
WTF is wrong with that shop? |

After lots of degreaser and a stiff plastic brush, I took my case down to the car wash. I plan on more cleaning before final assembly. _________________ If a water cooled engine cools its water with air, isn't it just an overcomplicated air cooled engine?

I didn't take pictures the first soak because they didn't stay here long enough before they were delivered back, but will take some when I get home today of the second time through the wash.
The exterior, yeah I can accept some crud that I would need to clean up but inside the case, not so much. |

I took my case to the car wash and used a can of degreaser on it then power washed with soap and pretty well was wetter than the case when I got done.
I did it when it was first disassembled and then again once the full flowing was done and after I had cleaned all the oil passages with wire brushes and brake clean.
Any heavy grease and oil buildup on the outside will only come off with sweat of the brow by carefully scraping with different shaped tools to get in all the little nooks and crannies.
Once that is removed then degreaser might take care of the rest.
You can put a lot of quarters in a car wash for $125.00........ _________________

GUNK Engine Bright does wonderful and believe it or not biodegradable SIMPLE GREEN (full strength) works really well as second wash after degreaser........
IF you are into solvents "petroleum spirits" (paint thinner?) works well (with or with out a parts washer) but will dry out you hands really quick, use gloves and hand lotion after use...
Also pressure washer or "U-Squirt" car wash helps a lot (take rain gear) ...

Here are the pics after the second time at the machine shop. I could scrap it out from between the ribs with my finger still.

I figured for sure any machine shop worth their salt could clean them just by tanking them. They told me that is the best any shop would get them. I must be too picky |

The shop I worked at would have charged about $40.00 to clean your case , heads and tins . They would of came out spotless with little paint left on the tins - - you got screwed , you are not being to picky ! Ask the "machinist" if that is clean enough for him to build an engine out of . |

You need to find a shop with a real jet wash cabinet, not a soak tank. Super hot chemicals, blasted with multiple high pressure jets and a rotating table. I haven't had a case yet the jet washer couldn't clean inside and out. It should only cost you about $40 tops.
After I get them back I still run through everything in the solvent tank with rifle brushes.

You could have done a better job simply putting the case into your dishwasher at home. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

I agree with all you guys, just needed some moral support for being pissed. Already used a bottle of degreaser and half bottle of aluminum rim cleaner on the one half. What really ticks me now is I ruined my best tooth brush |

I can't speak specifically for a Type 4 case, however, I have always taken my Type 1 cases to the car wash, and used their high pressure wands. This will clean any built up grease, oil, etc, and you can also clean all the passages (remove the plugs first, of course). I've also used this method when clearancing the case for a stroker crank/rod setup (to remove shavings). _________________ Neil.
