The old 36 hp pulleys were larger in diameter than the later 40 hp and up. However the later pulleys while same in diameter timing mark location is different. John Muir's book has a nice breakdown of pulleys, years and timing specs, it's worth a look as there are at least 10 different ones. Me I'd use the larger pulley because the stock pulleys are interchangeable . That larger pulley spins the cooling fan just a little faster |

Can someone post the breakdown of the different crank pulley sizes?
I have looked and can not seem to find this info on The Samba. _________________ WANTED:

Just use the 7" one. It is for DH cooling system, but will work better on any earlier non-DH engine that is 40 HP and bigger.
Check out the 1963-67 Transporter Workshop Manual in the 40 HP section VW mentions using a slightly bigger than stock crankshaft pulley to help prevent engine pinking.
VW increased a few times since 1960 the size of both the cooling fan width, number of fan blades and crankshaft pulley diameter. For instance the biggest non-DH fan was 29 mm inside width measurement, DH started out with 33, then 34, and finally 35 mm.
You can research this more through the type 1 (thru the "upcoming" button) and type 2 parts reference manuals here:

Also another great source of info there is the "Progressive Refinements" manuals there that list by date the changes VW did to each of the VW production lines. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I thought the 7 inch one was the biggest diameter VW used; It is a 1600 bus pulley, 7 inch D-pulley so i'll use it, thanks. _________________ WANTED:
